First Look: Create panoramic photos with Pano for iPhone

Panoramic picture taken with iPhone and Panorama software

Debacle Software has just released Pano (App Store link), an iPhone app that creates panoramic pictures from multiple iPhone photos -- up to four in one panorama.

Making panoramas is quite simple. You begin by launching the app on the iPhone, at which time you're asked to take your first picture. Pano prompts you to use or retake the photo, and if you choose to use it, you're given the opportunity to take the second picture. Pano overlays a transparent version of the rightmost portion of the previous picture over the left hand side of the image (see below), providing a guide for aligning the pictures. (Sorry about the ringer icon -- I bumped the ringer volume button while making the screenshot)

The process is repeated for up to four photos. If you take three shots and don't want to take a fourth, you can cancel, at which time you're given the option to quit, continue taking pictures, or make the panorama (see below). The last step displays a "merging" progress bar, during which time Pano's proprietary process is stitching the photos together.

The final panorama is placed into the iPhone Photos library, where it can be emailed or synced with iPhoto. Pano costs $2.99, well worth the price for what you get.

somebody mentioned the free app PanoLab
- I've been playing with that one and I can tell you it simply overlays one image on top of the previous, after you manually line it up.

i.e. it doesn't do ANY blending of the images, so results are really not very impressive from PanoLab. the latest update lets you manually realign images after they've been placed, and even lets you bring photos that were behind up to the front. it does let you overlay as many photos as you'd like, in X and Y directions, which is kinda cool. but I'd said it's more of a photo-mosaic/overlay tool, than a true pano application.

this Pano program mentioned in this article looks MUCH more useful, including the way it helps you pre-align your next shot before you capture it (just like my Canon digicam does). Hopefully they add capability for more than 4 images.

I will be purchasing it to give it a try, $2.99 seems a reasonable price. Thanks TUAW for bringing it to our attention!

How did you get a resolution of 2659 x 585 px? Dd you resize the picture after the shot?

I like DoubleTake for stitching panoramas on the Mac

give the demo a try, it's fully functional - it just puts a watermark on the final pano until you decide to buy.

If you are so sorry about the ringer icon why didn't you just retake the screen shot there and then it would have taken about 3 seconds.

I like Cycorder, but does anyone know how you can actually transfer the videos to your computer or something like that?

You transfer the videos using SSH. Saurik said at some point he may incorporate a better method into the program.

I have a tutorial for how to get the videos off the phone and convert them for sharing with others, or for placing them into your iPod section of the phone so they will play there
