TUAW Unboxes the new MacBook Pro
It would seem that everyone is buzzing about the new MacBook/Pro, so I went and bought one! Seriously, it was just to do the unboxing photos for TUAW (Really! Stop looking at me like that!). In the MacBook video, Apple tells us that they have reduced the size of the boxes that the MacBooks ship in ... they're not kidding either. The boxes are roughly the thickness of a ream of paper; and they're almost half as short as the old boxes.Gallery: MacBook Pro (October 2008) Unboxing
Take a look for yourself and see the new box design (it's quite nice). We want to know if you will buy a new MacBook Pro so be sure to take part in our poll below.

I voted other... I bought a Refurb BlackBook a few weeks ago as soon as the firewire rumors became real(ish). I teach and use video a ton, and my MiniDV camera is firewire only.
One day, I will need a new MacBook, and I will have no choice to get a new one. Don't get me wrong, they are really purdy, but for $1099, I got excellent specs, firewire, and the (now collectors edition) black plastic body.

I would definitely buy one. The problem is that i can't afford it right now. Apples notebooks are 40% more expensive in Denmark, but if i lived in the US i would have bought one already. They're awesome.

Another Danish? :)
I haven't got a Mac, and this is the one I'm going to buy... But yeah... They're *** expensive.

Yes, they are expensive, but remember you will get all of the money back when you sell the thing a few years later. Because other than PC notebooks which are almost worthless a few years down the road, Mac notebooks are still worth quite a bit then.

Something's rotten in the state of Denmark -- the Apple prices!

My MBP pro badly needs to be replaced (purge surge with sparks, sigh), but I want to know about the performance of the MacBook vs the MBP. I saw it can play Warhammer, so I am guessing it can play WoW. That is the only I thing I do that requires "power". Rest of what I do, the plain ole MB would suit me fine.
$400 more for slightly larger screen (I generally have it hooked up to a monitor), Expresscard slot (I can upgrade my data card to a USB one), Geforce 9600 card (this might be the deciding), and firewire port (hmmm importing movies might be needed at some point) does not seem like a bad value (basis on education discount), but If I can save some money, I am all for it.

There are basic benchmarks up on Gizmodo for comparison sake... Its not terribly impressive on the MBP side, but the MB's have started to kick some ass.

I voted no. I'll wait for the next major refresh which will probably be in a couple of years.
Things I don't like about the new MBP:
-The machine is slightly larger (and heavier) than the model it replaced.
-Big black Bezel around the screen.
-The new KB. (although I may have try it first.)
I don't care about lack of firewire (don't own anything FW). I actually prefer the glossy screen since it's what I have now. It's nowhere near as bad people make it out to be.
Every else about the new model I'm fine with.

randy you might want to check your facts yes its like .02 in. wider then it predecessor but thats normal. other than that its thinner and lighter then its predecessor. i think all you guys need to just go to a dang apple store or retailer and use the laptops and trust me you are going to def want one of them.

I want a 13" Pro
I cannot live with a laptop as big as the 15"
Shame Apple knows better and has removed FW

My 1st Rev MacBook is humming along just fine. I won't need 64-bit until Snow Leopard comes out, so I'm going to wait until these things start shipping with the new OS.
But once Snow Leopard comes out it's a done deal.

Aren't all Intel Macs running 64 bit OS X already?
Darren said 12:10PM on 10-17-2008
The original MacBooks are 32-bit Core Duo. They didn't go to the 64-bit Core 2 Duo until sometime after I bought mine (Aug '06).

I want to buy one, but I'm seriously annoyed at the huge jump in price here in Australia. The high end MB Pro is $3999, up from $3399.
Bit of a joke!

That's a bit odd. I'm assuming you mean the 17" which wasn't revised in the latest update (yet). Why the price bump for an identical machine to what existed before the anouncement.

I'm using my 12-hour old 15" MacBook Pro now. I have to tell you, this thing is smooth.
