Fission 1.6 makes iPhone ringtones even easier
Rogue Amoeba has released version 1.6 of the nifty lossless audio editor Fission with a handy new feature: built-in iPhone ringtone saving. Fission has always been a great application for making relatively simple edits to audio files: cropping, trimming, cutting and pasting, etc. Now it makes turning MP3, AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or WAV files into iPhone ringtones a one-step process. Once you save a file as a ringtone it will automatically be passed to iTunes for syncing to your iPhone.Of course you can do it the old-fashioned way with GarageBand, but if your audio file just needs simple editing the Fission method will likely be easier and faster. In addition to the ringtone saving (and various bug fixes), version 1.6 allows you to insert periods of silence into a file and exactly set the location of the playhead.
Fission 1.6 is a free upgrade to registered owners; it's $32 for new users and a demo is available.

Why do these people keep coming out with new and vastly overpriced ways of doing this? Every mac user out there can do this for FREE using garage band or one of several websites. It's pure idiocy that someone would release a program that sells for 1/3 of $100 and doesn't REALLY offer any valid selling points.

It's free and in three steps to can cut up to 30 sec of any mp3 and the output dumps right into the itunes ring tone folder. I don't even have my iphone yet and already have a handful of ringtones lined up for install!

Love it, although I create them the old fashined wat too, for better control or at least crop what I ant first, then use iToner to do the rest.

Open cydia, install RiPTones, and run it for instructions!
I never tried Fission because of this:
"Before purchase, the quality of audio saved with Fission will be intentionally degraded with a series of audio fades."
Try our demo. It sucks!
Well, as a user of Fission, I'm excited about this update. I use Fission mainly for trimming my music (Fission is much finer than iTunes), but I've made a few ringtones too. This will eliminate a few steps and make it even simpler. Sweet!
I too wouldn't mind changing the colors in Fission though.
Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a free audio editing program that should work for creating ringtones. I just got my 3G this weekend so I have not tried it yet but it does support several formats.

I wish they'd let me change the background and the wavelength colors... blue on blue gets old.
