LogMeIn Ignition promises remote screen sharing from iPhone

If you've got a far-flung assortment of computers to manage, there are some great zero-config paid and install-a-client-first free options out there -- including the cross-platform hosted approach of LogMeIn. The LogMeIn Free client runs fine on Mac OS X, and the web-based control UI is capable; but how delightful would it be to take that same capability and stick it in your pocket? Very delightful.

LogMeIn has begun accepting applications for the private beta of LogMeIn Ignition for iPhone/iPod touch, the mobile client version of the remote control platform. With a final release planned for the end of the year, the client will allow full remote control of any computer in your list, including screen blanking and zoom/pan options.

While there are great IT admin tools for other mobile platforms (and some promising but never-completed iPhone tools), the iPhone admin explosion hasn't quite arrived yet. LogMeIn is definitely an industrial-strength player and the presence of the client will help to legitimize the iPhone and iPod touch as an enterprise device.

Thanks Shannon

if this is turned into reality, it would be the best thing ever after the iPhone itself!!

VNC clients (such as Jaadu) does not have ANY form of encryption. Everything you do over the internet can be seen in plain text! It does not have SSH.

Like others said... over a local network, VNC is fine... Over the internet, it is not secure.

Thanks for the heads up Michael.. I wasn't aware of this invite yet I use Logmein most days. The fact that even 'logmein free' still uses https, AND works on just about ANY browser, AND behind just about any corporate firewall that supports port 80 & 443 is what ticks the box for me. I worked for a UK Government agency that has VERY locked down PCs and a tight firewall with websense, yet I can log on to my mac every lunchtime from my corporate PC with ridiculous ease. If you don't want to commit to the pro version to get the extras like file transfer FARFINDER @ US $35 is a very acceptable alternative that's just a 1 time payment and is the Web 2.0 at the client end.

Errr. actually folks , you can already access Logmein computers from an iPhone/Touch if you change the host protocol from jave to http but it's a tad slow, a proper client will simply be awesome, no need to use all that clever sounding ssh stuff.

Does anybody actually allow LogMeIn to be installed on all the computers at larger corporations??? All the ones I deal with have VPNs set up. I would have thought that admins have all the tools they need already on the iPhone - built in VPN client, iSSH, WinAdmin, and Jaadu VNC/Teleport. I use all of these programs regularly over the internet to remote locations...

I personally love Jaadu, it would take alot for a product to sway me their way.

I'm confused. Looks just like Jaadu VNC. However I know nothing about these types of screen sharing apps. Whats the wow factor for this program over Jaadu (Which is awesome by the way, and very easy to set up)?

See above. VNC is fine for the local LAN, LogMeIn works in a distributed/wide-area scenario.

Excellent. I use LogMeIn at home and work, if no other reason because it just works. No configuration needed, it finds its ways through firewalls and proxies. Works great in a web browser. So of course I'd love to use it from my iphone as well.

if need be, this would get me to pay for a LogMeIn account! i already use the free version daily.
