iPhoneHellas: 2.2 coming November 21
According to iPhoneHellas.gr, version 2.2 of the iPhone firmware will be made available on November 21. The site says that the tipster is "reliable" but offered few details. Gizmodo calls the site "consistently reliable."
The tipster did say, however, that the update will not contain Greek keyboard support. Rumor has it that the update will contain:
- Street View, public transportation and walking directions for Maps
- An always-visible search field in Safari
- A rating request before you delete an app
- The ability to download podcasts directly to your handset
- Location sharing via email
- Support for Emoji icons
- An option to turn off auto-correction
There is still no word, of course, about the most requested and elusive of options: copy and paste. Gizmodo seems to think that -- if the release date is indeed on the 21st -- the major features of the update have been frozen. Looks like we'll have to wait until 2.3.

"An always-visible search field in Safari" I sure hope that if this is a feature it can be turned off! The screen is small and there is already too much going on there!

looking forward to the auto correct turn off, I wanted to kill it just yesterday as it kept incorrectly correcting my email i was typing.

More important to me would be the inclusion of ToDo and Notes syncing.

What Bruce said. Without a way to get text files (Notes) and iCal To-Dos into the iPhone, it doesn't do something that my old PalmPilot does without a hitch.

Pretty sure the most 'elusive' of features has been the push API.
Copy & paste hasn't been elusive, in that it hasn't ever been present.

And here I thought "true" turn-by-turn navigation was the most elusive feature.

PLEASE Apple, just let me READ and compose email in LANDSCAPE MODE! I'm tired of scrolling an email back and forth to read it. How hard can this possibly be to implement???

No Video Recorder and No Copy & Paste is a damn Conspiracy!!! To hell with em till they give us what should have been on the first phone....

how about a real Bluetooth stack that can send files? Forward SMS? Send vcards? Sync without cable to iTunes? The iPhone is so cool but is missing these very basic features almost any phone under 150 dollars can do. Much more important than copy paste IMHO.

I'll take auto correct off over c & p anyday, still both would be nice. Also, how about landscape view in ALL applications?

If Apple wanted to put in copy and paste, they would have done it by now. It is like that "elusive" second mouse button that has been missing for 24 years. It ain't gonna happen.

Umm... Apple's Mighty Mouse has two button functionality. Actually, I think the trackball thingy is also a button. And the new Macbook's have support for multi-"button"/multi-touch built-in. :)

But it was absent for the 24 years prior, despite people repeatedly asking for it. So at that run rate, we will have Copy and Paste on the iPhone in 24 years!

how about being able to text or email with the iPhone on the side. Which makes for a larger keyboard? Anyone else

Just jailbreak it!! Then you can disable auto correct and type SMS and emails in landscape. You can also use MMS since your paying for it anyway with AT&T. You can even tether the phone without paying extra to AT&T!
Most of the things you people want are already there. just jailbreak it! Takes 15 minutes and is completely reversible!
Stop waiting for apple and just do it yourself!!

Yep.

In my experience, Jailbreaking seriously undermines the stability of the phone. With just a default install, nothing installed except for SSH, Safari crashes on 1 out of every 3 pages I try to load.
Without Jailbreaking, I can go a week without Safari crashing. (a sad metric all the same)
colouroflight said 5:13PM on 11-12-2008
Amen. It's your device; you paid for it and you have the right to do whatever the hell you please with it, including extending its functionality when the manufacturer fails to.
$30 extra to tether is a particular insult.

What application lets you write email while rotated?
Clark said 5:17PM on 11-12-2008
Jailbreaking doesn't affect my stability. Installing any of the theming apps on a jailbroken phone does however. But that's not a feature of jailbreaking itself.
