Rumor: Quad-core iMacs

It's not even December, yet Macworld rumors are starting to fly. Digital Times is reporting that Apple is among the vendors ready to use Intel's new 65W low-power desktop CPUs, specifically designed for all-in-one computers. The lower heat output makes these great little chips for the iMac.

Additionally, these chips would come with a faster bus, and even run a bit cheaper than the dual core chips Apple is currently using - the 2.33GHz, 2.66GHz and 2.83GHz chips cost $245, $320 and $369, respectively, according to Digital Times.

The iMac has been the star of many Macworld keynote speeches, and we expect the same this year. See you in January!

How these rumors spread:

"I hope a quad-core gets put into the iMac some time in the future"

"So and so said they wanted a quad-core processor put in the iMac"

"So and so said they thought there was going to be a quad-core processor in the iMac"

"Someone important said that there was going to be a quad-core processor in the iMac"

Digital Times: "Our sources say there's going to be a quad-core processor in the iMac"

I want one of these, but without a screen. When will Apple bring out a mid-range screenless computer that is more expandable than the Mac Mini but cheaper and smaller than the Mac Pro? The Mac Pro Nano would be great for me!

If they do, it won't have a FireWire port, so you have to get a Mac Pro.

Hey! What about a chance to have Mac Mini already updated? Nvidia chipset + better (and cheeper) CPU. When do all this things stop changing to get a new Mini finally?..

Boy would I be bummed if Quad-cores came out for the iMacs. I just got my 2.8GHz "extreme" replaced by a maxed out 3.06GHz model by Apple. It's one thing to have an older dual-core computer when faster models dual-cores come out..but a whole extra 2 cores! Bummer.

If this is a work machine, and you routinely use Adobe software, or virtualize multiple operating systems, then I fully understand your pain.

If you're just running your iMac at home, listening to music, surfing the 'net, watching DVDs, hell, even booting into Windows to play some games, the difference in performance over the C2D 3.06GHz machine is going to be negligible.
