PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.2 released
The dev team has released PwnageTool and QuickPwn for iPhones and first generation iPod touch devices, for those who want to upgrade to firmware 2.2.
Important: If you have a 3G iPhone and you want to unlock it in the near future, you cannot use QuickPwn and must use PwnageTool (currently available for Mac users only). As the dev team explained yesterday, the 2.2 update for the 3G iPhone also upgraded the baseband. In order to achieve a jailbreak and keep future soft-unlock options available, you must use PwnageTool to create a custom .ipsw file that preserves the 2.1 baseband but provides the software functionality of a 2.2 update. Read the entire dev team posting for complete instructions.
Users with first generation iPod touches, 2G (first gen) iPhones, factory unlocked iPhone 3Gs or users who have no desire to soft-unlock their iPhone 3G can use the QuickPwn tool. Neither PwnageTool nor QuickPwn work with the second generation iPod touch. The dev team has already said that its current focus is the 3G unlock and then they will look into working on the new iPod touch.
If you just want to use Installer.app on your 2G or 3G iPhone and don't want to go through the jailbreak process, check out Pusher from RiP Dev. It works with 2.2 and doesn't open the system partition when writing information, making it a potentially safer jailbreak alternative.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in! And thanks Josh for the RiP Dev tip!

December 05 2008 at 1:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply`ve tried 2 different quckpwns and 3 different firmwares
the one quickpwn when i hit ok to start says quickpwn has encountered a problem and must shut down
then i tried another quickpwn
i get passed the pick a firmware and all that stuff
i hit ok and once it gets to the steps it gets stuck on the one where its trying to get it into restore mode (the first step)
if i look at my ipod it shows a pick of the usb and itunes.
if i load itunes, after quickpwn doesnt work, and it says it has located a device in dfu mode and needs to be restored
i really want to jailbreak my ipod
its a 1st gen ipod touch
im using a pc
the three firmwares ive tried are 2.0 2.1 and 2.2
i would greatly appreciate help
thanks,
Please help or tell me who can. My iPhone 3G has 2.2 firmware and was once jailbroken under 2.1. I'm running quickpwn 2.2 for windows and it won't connect in recovery mode. The progress bar is stuck close to the end and won't move. I've had to restore the phone twice. This is extremely frustrating as I only had to try once when I jailbroke it before.

Hey all! Glad to say that I've successfully jailbroken my iPhone 3G and have it up and running. I heard that now the Youtube app is having a problem running on a jailbroken device and that seems to be happening on my iPhone. Any ideas? TIA!
November 24 2008 at 11:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have just installed pusher and it's crap.. i want to do a system restore but i have purchased applications from the Apstore... will these applications be removed if i do a restore? is there any way of backing these applications? cheers
November 24 2008 at 8:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI did the same as you deej - installed Pusher, and it shure is crap! Not much to get from "Installer" and it made my iPhone very unstable (like the phone - didn't work at all). I could not find a way to uninstall this so I did a restore from iTunes and all my purchased apps (and everythin else I had set to sync) where sync'ed back from iTunes after restore. No problem at all :) The only problem was Apps where put back alfanumerical so I had to sort them again.
November 24 2008 at 3:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWEIRD... I have a first gen iPhone which I had been unlocked/jailbroken with PwnageTool on 2.1 firmware. I upgraded to 2.2 through iTunes - and it's remained unlocked!! No need to run the new PwnageTool or QuickPwn. Is this normal?!?
November 24 2008 at 4:27 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHey all! This is my first time jailbreaking my iPhone, so I need some help. Whenever iTunes backs-up my iPhone 3G, if the iPhone is jailbroken will it backup the jailbroken version? If I restore the iPhone, won't it still be jailbroken? Thanks! By the way, I have an iPhone 3G with all the latest updates and the latest version of iTunes.
November 23 2008 at 8:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt used to be the whole thing including jailbroken apps would be backed up, but I'm not sure this is the case anymore (but app backup and apt backup take care of this). Your firmware is not "backed up" anywhere, and so you must do a restore with the custom firmware you originally jb'd with. I think this is correct.
November 24 2008 at 3:38 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyEver since 2.0 firmware I couldnt Unlock my 2g iPhone. I Still cant with Quickpwn or Winpwn. Is there a clear way? I follow all the steps to unlock it and when Its finished its Jailbroken, and ready. So when I insert my Sim it Locks up and says it's a different sim. Whats the Deal with that??!!
Any Help?
Thanks Neural. Looks like there is some issue with the site right now, will check it out later today.
