PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.2 released
The dev team has released PwnageTool and QuickPwn for iPhones and first generation iPod touch devices, for those who want to upgrade to firmware 2.2.
Important: If you have a 3G iPhone and you want to unlock it in the near future, you cannot use QuickPwn and must use PwnageTool (currently available for Mac users only). As the dev team explained yesterday, the 2.2 update for the 3G iPhone also upgraded the baseband. In order to achieve a jailbreak and keep future soft-unlock options available, you must use PwnageTool to create a custom .ipsw file that preserves the 2.1 baseband but provides the software functionality of a 2.2 update. Read the entire dev team posting for complete instructions.
Users with first generation iPod touches, 2G (first gen) iPhones, factory unlocked iPhone 3Gs or users who have no desire to soft-unlock their iPhone 3G can use the QuickPwn tool. Neither PwnageTool nor QuickPwn work with the second generation iPod touch. The dev team has already said that its current focus is the 3G unlock and then they will look into working on the new iPod touch.
If you just want to use Installer.app on your 2G or 3G iPhone and don't want to go through the jailbreak process, check out Pusher from RiP Dev. It works with 2.2 and doesn't open the system partition when writing information, making it a potentially safer jailbreak alternative.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in! And thanks Josh for the RiP Dev tip!

And just how do you plan to do data tethering without a jailbreak? Unless you were one of the lucky few who got NetShare before Apple killed it, you need to jailbreak to install PDANet so you can tether.

I found a video guide for this if anyone is interested:

I have a first gen. Iphone and it has 2.2 firmware. My question is can I unlock it with quickpwn and not use a turbosim card?

You'll need to restore and use PwnageTool. Pusher is designed to not allow the competing (and superior) Cydia to be installed, forcing the use of Installer.app. The vast majority of jailbreak packages are available in Cydia, and PwnageTool/Quickpwn are very safe programs.
As an aside, I'm rather shocked that TUAW would recommend Pusher without explaining the lack of utility provided by Installer.app. Very irresponsible.

how do I uninstall Pusher?
the font changes look terrible and installer isn't nearly as useful as cydia seems to be.
btw, this is my first attempt to make any "jailbreak" like changes to my 3G iPhone. My 2G iPhone was unlocked and jailbroken without any ridiculous changes like this system font issue.
please help

Pusher sounded very tempting, until I read your comment. I have never broken my 3G iPhone but am considering it so I can tether...
If I jailbreak with quickpwn, can I install my already downloaded Apps to my phone?

Wow, I just read up on this problem on the new MacBooks. That was very sneaky of Apple to do.

Just finished one of my usual guides. It is for first generation iPhone users only, who are either unlocked or want to be unlocked and get on 2.2 firmware. This guide uses PwnageTool in expert mode. I'll make a simple mode guide when that function is enabled in the program. I'm also making QuickPwn and PwnageTool guides for 3G iPhones. I only write Mac tutorials by the way.

pusher is crap. I'm restoring my iphone now. The system font change is undocumented and ugly! It also screwed my phone's pooch. I have 11 Gigs of "Other" and all of my music was gone. I've given up on jailbreak and installer in general. Apple's stock software seems to be holding it's own.
