Pixelmator releases 1.3.1

The good folks at Pixelmator have released version 1.3.1 of their lightweight and smooth photo editing software. While the update is mostly "bug fixes and minor improvements" (isn't that exciting, unless maybe you really were waiting for "iSigh support" -- which probably means iSight), but there are two big changes: the Color Management panel has been updated (as you can see above), and the Refine Selection tool has a very nice, real-time masked UI that lets you see exactly which parts of your selection are being feathered or smoothed out.

Definitely not as big an update as the 1.3 Tempo that we posted about a while ago (although 1.4 Sparkle, we're told, is being worked on right now), but it is free to all users, and in fact ready to download right now in Pixelmator. The app itself costs $59, but if you're looking for something a little more refined than GIMP that's not quite as pricey as Photoshop, it's your new bicycle.

I tried for a moment an earlier version of this program. It changed all my image extensions to be opened by default with pixelmator. All my extensions, PSD, JPG, etc.....I immediately removed the program from my drive. Any company that would make software that does crap that does things like this should be mailed a dead fish.

Agreed, very annoying, and just plain rude. It should be optional, and shouldn't just happen without a warning.

Another big change they made was that the License info is no longer stored in the users home directory but in Library/Preferences or
/Network/Library/Preferences.

Great change for a multi-user environment.

This update was important. And it's good to know that you write about it. ; )

Since the Macheist Bundle I have Pixelmator and use it a few months now. After getting used to it, Pixelmator is quite a fine piece of software.

Participated in the beta back when. Tried it today. Might replace fireworks for me due to it's speed and the fact that it has almost all the tools I use frequently now. Also, way better UI than photoshop (not that that's saying much or that it has anywhere near the features to display).

It's software for OS X. Exactly how is it not relevant for TUAW? It's not like there's a lot happening in the Apple world these days to report on. Sometimes the news is good and sometimes it's filler, that's the news industry.
