Among the top paid iPhone applications are Koi Pond, Texas Hold'em, and Moto Chaser. Among the top free iPhone applications are Pandora, Facebook, and Tap Tap Revenge. There's also a top downloaded podcast list. We didn't quite make the top downloaded podcasts list, but hey, there's always next year.
So, if you're looking to find some of the best online content for 2008, look no further than iTunes. You can click here to visit the iTunes Best of 2008 section.

I have a problem with "Best of 2008" categorization. It sounds like it's just the most downloaded apps. That doesn't mean that those are the best! I've downloaded many apps (that were free) that I deleted very quickly after trying them out.
It should be based on the highest rated apps or Editorial Picks.

Yeah well... same goes for the Best of 2008 Music Charts or the Top 40 Hitparade... Top of Best doesn't have to mean it's actually good, it only refers to what sells best.

@daenny
No, it's not comparable to "Best of 2008 Music Charts or the Top 40 Hitparade...". With music, you get a chance to listen to it before you buy it. We HAVE to download any apps before we can even see how they perform.
I have had to purchase some apps (because Apple has not given us "try and buy") only to find that they do not deserve to stay on my iPhone -- and those get added into the "Best of 2008" count! :(

Some of those apps I probably wouldn't agree with, but hey who am I to argue?
I also think that you guys should have made the top podcasts, I mean come on.

The list is based on the most downloaded apps as the other comments say. But hey, they are good and hence they are most downloaded! Its a good list.
However, there are many repetitions like the Facebook app appearing twice. So, Apple should have set a filter to skip the app from appearing for the second time in the list if its already there once.

Moto Racer was so bad in fact it was one of the few iPhone apps that made me regret spending so much money on. Ugly graphics, bad controls, checkpoints, no pause function (WTF!?), just bad. Really bad. There are much better racing games available for the iPhone, such as Crash Bandicoot and Asphalt 4.

@Judd:
Totally agree. Audio A4 Driving Challenge should get an award for the most downloaded app with the lowest average rating.
I have downloaded more than 140 iPhone apps (most of them free) and deleted many more than I've kept. And only a small percentage of those I've kept have earned a permanent place on my iPhone.
