Flickr videos now iPhone compatible
The folks at Flickr have released some good news today. Specifically, their mobile site at m.flickr.com has been improved to include, among other things, video support for the iPhone and iPod touch. It seems to work by playing a Quicktime version of your clips, thus getting around the whole lack of flash support. The folks at Flickr note that the iPod touch and iPhone are the only mobile devices that can play the movies for now, but others will be added soon.
Other improvements to m.flickr.com include the option to comment on photos and add them to your collection of favorites. I found the site to be very fast indeed over WiFi and no slouch over EDGE, either. Those of you with later model iPhones (and iPod touches) will have to tell me how your experiences have been.
Thank you to Flickr and the Yahoo! Video Platform group. Now if only some others would follow suit (we're looking at you, Hulu).

Wasn't it just a few months back that Flickr users threw such a fit over Yahoo adding video support that Yahoo eventually gave in and said they would not change things? They wanted to keep the ideal focus on photos only.
How come I didn't hear any complaining about them actually adding video support this 2nd time around? Did the user's change their minds after seeing it?

Tried 20 videos, none work on my 2G iPhone. I click the video and it does NOTHING. No joke. Wifi nor EDGE

Same here, videos do not work for me on a first gen iPhone. Maybe they haven't rolled it all out yet but didn't see this in the article.

We only started encoding videos in the new format this morning (Thur 4th Dec PST). So (with a few exceptions that we special-cased) only newly uploaded videos will play on the iPhone.
Over the next few weeks we'll be re-encoding all the old videos so they will also be presented in the new format (and thus play on mobile devices).
I suspect Jeff and Oliver are trying to watch older videos that aren't yet in the new format.
You can always go here to see a bunch of videos that have definitely been encoded to work on the iPhone:

If this trend catches on, I can see why Apple are reluctant to put Flash on the iPhone:
If the iPhone can become so popular, that major sites create alternate video versions that use Quicktime instead of Flash, it's an extra bonus for Apple because their Quicktime format get's an even broader penetration.
Pretty smart ;)

Is it just me who finds it ironic that the iPhone is the only phone that can view the video, whilst at the same time being the only phone that can't record video...?
