iPhone triples market share as of Q3 2008

Apple saw the iPhone's market share triple over the past year, capturing 12.9 percent of the worldwide smartphone market, according to a new Gartner analysis.

For the quarter ending September 30, iPhones accounted for 3.4 percent of the market in 2007. That figure was more than 3x higher on the same day in 2008.

Nokia is the leader worldwide in smartphone sales, with 42.4 percent of the market. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion comes in second with 15.9 percent. In North America, Apple is in second place behind RIM, with iPhones accounting for over a quarter of all smartphones.

Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza also noted that this quarter marked the first time iPhone sales exceeded those of Windows Mobile devices; that's pretty astonishing when you consider how many flavors of WM handsets are out there.

Here's the mistake: "BlackBerry maker Research in Motion comes in third with 15.9 percent." That should be SECOND. iPhone is third (with 12.9). RIM comes in SECOND, not third.

Just seeing if you were paying attention. ;) I fixed the story, and I love you, too.

So who is in second worldwide? Nokia is in first with 42.4, RIM is in third with 15.9. Apple has to be somewhere BEHIND RIM with only 12.9. Who's in second? Or are these figures completely wrong? Very confusing....

Sorry to nitpick, but iPhone did not triple marketshare in Q3, but rather over the past year.

Misleading headline.

Which is what I said in the first phrase of the first sentence of the story. I suppose it should be "as of" Q3 2008. I'll make the change.

Thanks for the catch. I love you.

I-nnovation is a persistent talent. It is also not I-mpossible for the Iphone to win over the SmartPhone crowds. Although not the leader as Nokia's 43% market share shows, it gained ground in trendsetting and usablitiy-popular tools with I-speed.

Nokia is the *leader worldwide* in .... In *North America*, Apple is in second....
Along with what Richard said, this doesn't make sense either. Nokia is leading world wide and Apple is in second...but only in North America?

Normally I'm not one to be picky of posts, but this one really confused me. What 'market' are you talking about, the whole cell phone industry or the smartphone market? I'm assuming the smartphone market right?

I think the third paragraph is incorrect... Read it carefully!

"Nokia is the leader worldwide in smartphone sales, with 42.4 percent of the market. BlackBerry maker Research in Motion comes in third with 15.9 percent. In North America, Apple is in second place behind RIM, with iPhones accounting for over a quarter of all smartphones."

From this, Apple is 2nd and 4th!
