Santa Claus fired from App Store gig

Remember Santa Live 2008, the iPhone app that provided a new animated Santa Claus video to the kids every day?

Things started badly for Santa (developer Adam Majewski) shortly after the release of his app on November 14th when people found out the publisher (the Casual Game Network) was paying reviewers through Amazon's Mechanical Turk to purchase the app from the App Store, NS then leave positive reviews online.

Now the app has been pulled from the App Store by Majewski after a new fiasco -- last Friday's episode of Santa Live 2008 featured the ever-popular holiday song "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" (click opens iTunes). Apparently some parents became irate, concerned that they were going to have to explain to their little ones why grandma was killed by renegade horned ungulants.

Enough people complained about the December 5th message from Santa that Majewski yanked the app from the App Store. Anyone who has purchased the app already will be able to continue viewing the daily videos.

There are a lot of Grinches out there this Christmas!

Please explain to me how this is a strike against "political correctness" (PC)? This has absolutely *nothing* to do with PC! If you are going to critque something, dear comment-posting people, please use proper context and not a red-herring.

And really, any time I read how some person was raised this-or-that way and "turned out okay" I laugh out loud. I am sorry, but it is more likely than not that your parents got it wrong, and that you too will get it wrong. Most people have absolutely no idea how to parent, and so the reign of bad parenting continues.

The parents in question could have used the inclusion of a Christmas novelty song as an opportunity to either
1) discuss their concerns with their children and used it as a learning experience
2) develop a sense of humor and joy
or
3) become irrationally bitter and angry and attack the software developer

I'm sure many did the first 2 as for the 3s... I'm speechless.

I'm sure he could have weathered the "I'm a stupid parent..." storm of overly sensitive parents, but he gets a negative from me for being 1) being a stupid businessman and 2) having questionable ethics.

1) $12000 to design that application? Apparently the 3D animation put him over budget according to link but seriously... that's what estimates are for.

2) He pays people to write a him good review? That's a flawed strategy to begin with.... why not write a decent app to begin with?

I really hate this "holiday." It's a shame it always brings out the worst in people and it's getting worse and more commercialistic every year. Fuck Christmas. Go donate $100 to your favorite charity instead of buying gifts for people this year... I think that's what I'm going to do.

You think?

You don't already?

Your favorite charity will benefit more from a monthly contribution, even if it adds up to a lower annual amount.

And if you're thinking of stopping charitable donations because of the crisis -- see if you can reduce the amount instead. Even if it drops to $1 a month, that's better than nothing.

PC hogwash run amok. When I first heard of this, I thought it was due to him using unlicensed tunes; then I found out about the parent "outrage". Give me a break. Guess this means a lot of the fairy tale and nursery rhyme apps will be banished now too. ..

What?!? The witch wanted to EAT Hansel and Gretel? OMG, want someone think of the children!

Fieldrunners has poor little people running under fire of cannon towers?!? How barbaric!

A glorious blow has been struck for political correctness. And, y'know, against actual humans, but not that that ever mattered.
