The iPhone's camera jumping up in the Flickr ratings

This makes sense when you think about it, but it just seems really wild to me: in the list of Flickr's most popular cameras (compiled from the metadata attached to any photos that upload to the popular site), our favorite cell phone is climbing up the ranks. In fact, it had just recently overtaken the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR when the screenshot above was taken (though stats may have changed since then, as now it appears the iPhone never did cross that line).

Obviously, it's not for reasons of quality -- the iPhone's camera doesn't compare in the least to any of the others on that list. But when you consider that the iPhone is now the US's most popular handset, and that there are so many ways to quickly and easily shoot pictures snapped there up to Flickr, it becomes pretty clear why pictures from the iPhone are so popular on the site.

Unfortunately, they don't provide a timeline to these graphs, so we can't really trace the causes of that jump recently, though the App Store probably has something to do with it (doesn't it always?). Another arena where the iPhone is quickly becoming wildly popular.

and what accounts for the long, steady downward sloping preceding it?

Before posting to Flickr, I like to edit photos using Magic Touch app (so many tools, its like photoshop indeed) and Camera Bag (I like its interface and 1 click effects). No wonder iPhone camera photos jumping up in the Flickr ratings!

Hi,

If I may :
It tells more on how Apple brands its products and on how it refreshes its lines not-that often than the real popularity of iPhone vs. the world.

eg. the Digital Rebel appears in 2 separate versions ( XTi et XT )
the iPhone is just one unique version.

I guess that if you compare 'all Canon low-end DSLR' ( quite a few of them ) , 'all Nokia mid-range phone' ( a lotsa them ) and Apple Phone, the feeling would be different.

that said, Apple seems the only to have understood how important it is to keep its product unconfusing ( Acer eePC, you're listening ?)

Well, this is due to apps like ShoZu that allow uploading pics to Flickr and share them as soon as they are clicked !!

So,... yes there are a great no. of iPhone pic uploads.....

I know that I, personally, started to upload my iPhone pictures to Flickr after the appearance of interesting camera/post-processing apps in the App Store, such as Camera Bag.

Consider also, that for quite some time, pictures emailed from the phone were stripped of their EXIF tags, including model of camera.

This picture, taken and emailed 7/19/07, has no EXIF data: http://flickr.com/photos/frijole/854513721/in/dateposted/

This picture, taken and emailed 12/6/08 has them, and says "Taken with an Apple iPhone." http://flickr.com/photos/frijole/3087158497/

Coincidentally, anyone remember the "Taken with an Apple iPhone" zomg? http://www.macrumors.com/2007/04/29/first-photos-from-apple-iphone/

Turns out it was only as recently as the 2.1 update that emailed pictures didn't get stripped of their EXIF info. I bet that coincides with that big bump, as I mention here: http://tr.im/ontuawoniphones

my thoughts exactly.

Now Apple just needs to let us email full resolution images... :)
(even if it's a buried preference, or a preference that i could set per-contact so full res only gets sent to selected contacts.)
