Mobile Safari search via toolbar points to clearer results

Google quietly fixed a problem yesterday that bugged at least a few iPhone users -- the results page it returned when searching through the toolbar in Mobile Safari.

In a pre-Tuesday world, Google would return its standard, not-iPhone-formatted results page. Why? I honestly don't know, but personally didn't question it too deeply. It was what it was. I'd do my search, zoom into my result, and be on my way.

That was so 2008.

Now searches through the toolbar return nicely-formatted-for-iPhone results. Just as it should be.

Thanks to DJT for sending this in.

I always wondered why the iPhone toolbar would take you to a normal Google page. It was even more confusing to me when I found out Google already had an iPhone optimized website. Kinda wondered why they couldn't just forward the iPhone requests to that. Oh well, I got used to it, but it is a nice change!

And speaking of mobile sites not working right... TUAW it is much appreciated that you created a mobile version of your site... but when you post from it one is redirected to the full version of the site, which crashes mobile safari, and just as often, crashes the whole iPhone. idk why you don't just fix the main site (lose that stupid background blue gradient that is 99% hidden by the content anyway), but short of that... make it so after commenting from the mobile version will direct one back to the mobile version. kthx.

I like the mobile version... but it doesn't honor all the google preferences, such as when they're set to open links in a new tab. Annoying.

DJT, how did you get the sponsored Links to go away? I did the same search and got the same result but with sponsored links above the ones you show.

On my computer I can refresh a bunch of times and eventually the sponsored links go away, but not on my iPhone.

Oh man, this is a bummer. I really like the ability to open google links in a new window. It makes it easier to go back to your results. WIth the iPhone formatted page there is no option for that. That really stinks.

It also seems to be able to do conversions (100 USD in euro, 30 ft in meters) from the search bar in Mobile Safari where in the past it would look for that text.
