Vatican approves iPhone app
The Vatican's Pontifical Council for Social Communications has approved an iPhone app called iBreviary, which is apparently a virtual version of the liturgical book. The app itself was created by an iTalian (and yes, pun intended) priest, and during a trial release in Italy, was downloaded 10,000 times.
Now, the app has made it to the worldwide app store (in English, Spanish, French, and Latin, with Portugese and German coming in a later version), and is available for 74p (or 99 cents on the US store).
A while back, we heard about an iPhone saving a wedding, and who knows -- maybe this app will save a mass. If you've been looking to keep from having to carry a breviary and Apple's handset in your pocket, your day has come.

It's not your fault, but this is bad reporting. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications doesn't have the authority (or the need) to approve iPhone apps, or anything else. I have not been able to track down the full text of what the Council actually said, but it seems to have been more along the lines of, "This is very nicely done and a good way to apply technology."
It is a well-done app, BTW. There are a few flaws--the text wrapping doesn't seem to change when you change the font size, and I don't understand why you have to go to the Preferences app to change settings rather than within the app itself--but they're minor and easy to live with.

Note that this occurred only a few weeks after they let John Lennon off the hook for his remarks 42 years ago.

Another iPhone app that is well liked by Catholics around the world is 'Hail Mary' (by me). It can be used to pray rosaries.
See http://www.koolistov.net/hailmary for more info.
