AT&T sells $99 refurb iPhones until end of December

Just last week we mention that AT&T would start selling the iPhone 3G through its website. AT&T took that idea a bit further, and is now offering an iPhone 3G at a really good deal.

Currently being offered is a refurbished 8GB iPhone 3G for only $99US (with a 2-year contract). You heard right, you can get an iPhone 3G for only $99. So the rumors about the $99 iPhone were semi-true, except this isn't Walmart, and it's only a limited deal. You can get $50 off all refurbed iPhones until December 31.

Here's how the prices break down for the refurbs:

Thanks for the tip, Binja!

Another major development with the iPhone is beginning of sales at Walmart. This has spawned a whole new category of apps for the Walmart shopper. Here’s a sample from my Top Ten Walmart Apps at http://danieldurazo.com/2008/12/29/walmarts-top-ten-iphone-apps/

4. Sounds of NASCAR: No need to yell “Run ‘em off the road Dale!” while watching your favorite race. This handy app will do the yellin’ and whoopin’ for you with the touch of a button. Just pick from our list of top drivers (Juan Pablo Montoya not available) and popular sayings and your iPhone will do the cheering for you.

I just got off the phone with AT&T as well. I lost my iPhone (in a koi pond...long story) and have been trying to get a semi-reasonable replacement. I am not eligible for an upgrade (got my phone in July) or a new customer so I can't buy the refurbished phones. If I were to purchase a new phone they would also charge me an "upgrade" fee even though I had the iPhone to begin with. They also said if I bought one and it got stolen/lost again, I wouldn't be able to get another iPhone until my 2 year contract was up. Good deal if you are a new customer or eligible for an upgrade!

Are these subject to the same BS as the refurbs that reported about a few weeks back? In that they feature only the remaining warranty of the original owner and cannot be extended to with AppleCare?

I'm also assuming these are AT&T refurbs and not Apple ones, meaning that they might be more than 'slightly' used.

Here is the deal... when I first saw this deal last night on AT&T's website I went back and forth on getting it. I tried to upgrade a current account but it would only add them at $149 and $249, so I am not getting that additional $50 off. While $100 might be enough incentive to get a refurbished phone with only 90 day warranty (I would have to add AppleCare because I am on my 7th original iPhone so I don't have a lot of faith in a 90 day warranty) $50 discount isn't enough.

Whats the price for the 100$ iPhone if your ineligible for an upgrade. I get off my plan in september. I'll either wait it out, and hope for a new version of the iPhone, or get it now...depending on the price.

So unlike Apple who has an Excellent Warranty on Refurbs these only have a 90 day? if true Not worth a $50 savings.

are you sure that Apple Care won't cover ATT refurbs? That is not what the apple care guy told me...I specifically told him it was an ATT refurb and he said it would be covered. Or are you referring to warranty only and not Apple Care?

So, I've heard that there's an app for Jailbroken iPhones that limits their internet usage. I personally have a regular Samsung AT&T 3G phone with no data plan, so any internet usage is absurdly expensive (1 cent per Kb = $2 each time it checks visual voicemail). I do not want the phone using mobile internet unless it is from a wifi hotspot. Does this app work on the latest iPhone so that it will not use 3G or EDGE under any circumstances? I really just want an iPhone for apps and convergence, and I like that this is over $100 less than the iPod Touch. I'm assuming another AT&T phone does not need any sort of cracks on the iPhone to use the SIM card.

Also, can I get visual voicemail on this phone without the iPhone plan? As in, will it check for visual voicemails when it gets internet via a Wifi hotspot? I cannot see paying $30 a month for a data plan, but I'd like to save over $100 on an iPod Touch that's also a cooler looking phone.

Err, looking at it, seems they won't sell it (at least online) without ordering a plan online. I thought it was going to be "activate it via iTunes."

Juan I think the article is referring to the rumor about a $99 dollar iPhone at Wal-Mart, not Wal-mart offering iPhones in general.
