Rumors swirling around new iMacs
It seems that an upgraded iMac is a shoe-in at Macworld Expo in January. It's a consumer show, and the iMac is Apple's consumer desktop. Plus, it hasn't received a significant change in a while, so it's due. Now that the winter holidays are just about over, the Expo rumors have begun to circulate.AppleInsider has posted a few iMac rumors. First is mention of a new "...magnesium-aluminum alloy chassis," as well as a "cooling module." That's all the details there are, folks, so your guess is as good as ours if the current fan system will be replaced. We all know Steve and Jon Ive like quiet machines.
The more solid rumor is about the new 65W, low-power, quad-core desktop chips Apple is expecting from Intel. Along with Acer, HP and Dell, Apple has decided to make use of these chips, according to DigiTimes, though their target machine has not been identified. DigiTimes claims that these chips are suited to small form factor and all-in-one PCs.

A silent quad-core iMac would be a sweet machine indeed.

That's all fine and dandy, but how about some more blasted USB ports and a built-in media card reader? It's a shame to have a beautiful all-in-one machine yet still have my desk covered in cables and hubs. How about using some of that massive rear casing on the 24" iMac for some additional connectivity, Apple?

There's even more space if they drop FireWire!

I told my gf not 3 weeks ago that the alluminum and glass enclosures were close to the pinnacle of apples design. The only thing I could see them doing was to switch to a magnesium / something mix. I figured with Steve Jobs hardon for magnesium it was inevitable.

I hope that these "new" iMacs have a Matte screen option.

Go wishing my friend. If the Pro laptop models doesn't have this option, imagine the iMac then.

Every laptop (except the uni-body macbook/pros) has magnesium for an internal cassing.

At least I know it is common in dSLR:s
itsmeee said 4:42PM on 12-29-2008
They have. Steve Jobs used magnesium for the NeXT cubes.

It will be brilliant if the new iMac is using Core i7 processor (hope)!!

they won't use i7, but that would be nice
everything points to them using the 2.83 Quad-Core (Q9550) that they've been waiting for Intel to ship, that's why the rumored refresh didn't happen in December
I'd like to see
24" backlit LED
up to 8gb RAM (4gb standard)
Dual MATCHED video cards, possibly with SLi
500gb 7,200rpm HDD (option to 1gb)
HDMI
eSata
ExpressCard/34 ( for card readers, etc..)
4 USB ports minimum
ability to Dual Monitor with new Cinema Displays

I just want an updated Mac mini. I've never been a fan of the AIO design.

The iMacs haven't been updated in a while? How about the nasty cheese grater design of the mac pro (designed as a G5)? Please tell me someone over there wants to design a good looking pro machine!

Personally, I think the Mac Pro case design is timeless. But an update would certainly be OOHH-SUM, knowing it's Apple.
I'm just glad that Apple, unlike other PC manufacturers, doesn't change its designs bi-daily. It's so annoying to see a model that you own so visually outdated.

those designs may be getting older, but they're still the best out there.
