Thieves steal $10,000 of gear from an Apple Store

Thieves broke into an Apple Store in Palo Alto, California, and within two minutes had nabbed $10,000 worth of gear, including six laptops (gotta be MacBook Pros, right?) and two iPhones. And apparently they trucked right over to Los Gatos, and did the same thing about an hour later. There's no dollar figure from the second robbery, but more laptops and iPhones were stolen.

It's actually surprising this kind of thing doesn't happen more often, though I'm also surprised the thieves were able to duck in and out of the store in two minutes -- I've been to many Apple Stores, and I don't think I could carry out $10,000 worth of stuff and be gone in just two minutes.

But I guess as long as there's something expensive around, someone will try to steal it. Cops have a car description on these guys, and having gotten away with two robberies already, it's probably a good guess they'll try again. Only a matter of time before they're caught.

That stuff will be found as soon as it connects to the web.
If the people eventually using it are going to use it offline completely, it may not be found.

I'm sure they will snag the unlucky person who buys this stolen merchandise. It's unlikely they will nab the culprits.

A friend of mine had his MBP stolen from his apartment. A neighbor saw the guy and my friend found out who it was. He gave the info and the guy's address to the cops and they never did a
thing. What good isitf for cops to catch crooks? It's better to ticket drivers and set up DUI checkpoints. Those things earn revenue. Catching crooks, not so much.

A friend of mine had their iPhone stolen a few weeks back and they were told when the police found it that they used its internal GPS to find its location.

Not sure how true that is, but it could be.

don't they have those loud security alarms connected to each and every product on display there? this video proves it. just try and ignore the three girls in the picture.

inside job. nobody will bother to trace MAC or IMEI's. they'll never get caught. job well done. collect insurance. everyone's happy.

$10,000 retail in computer goods is a couple thou at best in loss. oh well, beef up security and fire some people.

where's the news?

10K of gear would only be ~5/10 MBPs+assorted phones/iPods, or a lesser number of high-end iMacs/Mac Pros...I would imagine you could carry that without too much trouble.
