So if AIM 2.0 is going to launch "any day now" does that mean we will be finally getting the iPhone update that will allow apps to run in the background (well, however exactly Apple is implementing that)?

Unfortunately backgrounding apps hasn't been discussed publicly by Apple, as yet. So there's nothing AOL or anyone can do until it's supported by Apple.
