Adium users disconnected from MSN
Late yesterday evening, users of the latest build (1.3.2) of the Adium multiservice chat client found themselves unexpectedly at a loss -- connections to Microsoft's MSN IM service stopped being accepted as of about 8 pm Pacific Time, according to a post on the Adium blog. The cause appears to be some kind of change on the server side that is blocking Libpurple (the underlying Adium communications library) clients using version 15 of the MSN protocol, so Adium isn't the only app affected.Users are advised to either roll back to Adium 1.3.1, which uses an older library that's still working, or use the official Messenger 7 client instead. The Adium team says they'll update the post when they have more details. Update 4pm ET: Reports are that Adium's MSN connectivity is working again.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

You can't really be a mac fanboy if you use MSN messenger!

It has nothing to do with being a "fanboy." It has everything to do with functionality. Adium is more functional than MSN, plain & simple.
It's the users like you that give regular Mac users (non-fanboys) a bad name.

Facebook chat in Adium stopped working for me a couple of weeks ago too. Anyone else having this problem?

Sort of. I noticed I was constantly getting logged out of Facebook, right in the middle of using the site. I took the account out of Adium, and it fixed itself.

Mine just started doing it to me as well.

@Big John You can't be logged into both Adium and Facebook. It will just keep logging you out of one or the other

if they hadn't have changed Adium to use libpurple they wouldn't be in this mess... when they changed it a couple of point releases ago it caused contacts using Microsoft's Live Communication Server to stop working too as they've not implemented that in libpurple yet :-(
wonder if anyone ever told them this little nugget: "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

Yes, because every change ever goes completely smooth. Nothing ever breaks with the old stuff or causes more obstacles than necessary.
The developers of Adium didn't just swap something over for shits and grins. They had good reason to switch, which you might learn by reading their changelogs, as well as their forums.

Adium has used libpurple since it's inception. libgaim is the predecessor to libpurple, they just renamed gaim (now Pidgin) and libgaim to avoid litigation.

Actually, Adium it's a more complex than that.
1.3 used the old libpurple implementation of MSN (MSNP9).
1.3.1 used the msn-pecan library (MSNP12) until the new libpurple implementation (MSNP15) was stable and mature enough to be added in 1.3.2.
Now that Microsoft played with its servers it just happened to be that only modern third-party libraries were affected.

Seems to be blinking back and forth for a few Twitter users and myself. Downgrading fixed the issue right up though.

I have a lot of trouble with Adium and AIM. Some days it just won't connect while other AIM clients will. Very intermittent and weird.

I found I couldn't log into MSN through Meebo last night either.. Somehow I don't think this is limited to any one specific messenger at the moment.

MSN now working again
January 12th, 2009 by Peter Hosey
As of 11:43 today (the 12th), MSN is now working for us in 1.3.2. Looks like the Libpurple team was right—it was a server-side problem, which Microsoft has now cleared up.
Thank you for your patien

I've never even upgraded my Adium to 1.3.2 - still using 1.3.1.
1.3.2's MSN support was too buggy, and a very important feature was completely missing: support for federated LCS contacts.
P.S. Libpurple stinks.r

I wonder if Facebook has the same reason as Meebo did. Facebook asked them to pull it from Meebo because they want Meebo to talk to them differently.
See this article for details about facebook and meebo:

It will be back soon they say.
