Sling getting serious about the iPhone

Sling Media now has a web page up on their site with a nice demo of Slingplayer Mobile for the iPhone, due to hit the app store sometime later this year.

It's been a long time coming, as people were breathlessly looking for this functionality when the iPhone first came out. 3G capability made us even surer that it would arrive, but a lot of time went by and SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone was nowhere to be seen.

Now that it's been demonstrated at Macworld, it seems a lot more real, and Sling Media says they are submitting it to the app store in this quarter. They are also providing a form so you can send in your email address and be notified when the happy day arrives.

Hopefully Apple and AT&T will bless the app and iPhone users can move on and get their hopes up for that next big thing.

On the iPhone it only updates at 15 frames per second. Not 30fps like Slingbox on a computer. Not 30fps like when you're watching a movie or tv show in the iPod app. That's one of the ways they can do wifi, edge, and 3G.

A slingbox representative at CES told me that it was a limitation Apple put on them by not giving them access to the full power of the phone. Only Apple apps can utilize the APIs to achieve full motion video. - michaelsmith.tv

Sling demonstrated a proof of concept app at MacWorld 2008 on a jail broke iPhone.... (or it might have been 2007). I have been a Sling-fan for a long time and unfortunately Apple rides in the back of their bus.

It'll be interesting to see if Apple allows it to be used over 3G. The SDK terms prohibit excessive bandwidth use and this would also compete with Apple selling TV shows on iTunes.

Sling's entire executive team just walked. This may not affect any product that's in the pipeline -- but by the same token, nothing should be taken as a given, either.

Not really a surprise and very typical in corp purchases of these types...the purchase agreement with Echostar required execs they stay a year likely to ease transition, which expired last fall. I doubt this will cause any addn'l delay, especially considering how long this rollout is taking already.

Sling included the ipod touch along with the iphone, so that confirms wifi.

It will work on WiFi, 3G, and Edge from my experience with the WinMo product.
