iPhone pix making front pages
The crash and near miraculous rescue of the passengers and crew of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in New York City has been big news for the last day. Like many news events, it has been extensively covered by news agencies, and, as we are seeing more frequently now, by the public using camera phones. With the popularity of the iPhone, a breaking news story is never far from our favorite cellular device.
Janis Krums, a Florida businessman, was on a Hudson River ferry boat when the pilot plunged the airliner into the frigid waters yesterday afternoon. His picture of the sinking aircraft, with passengers knee deep in water on the right wing helped tell the story in a single image, and his dramatic shot was splashed on front pages across the country. Krums used Twitpic to publish his photo, and that service was soon shut down by high traffic. He was interviewed on MSNBC and kept his friends up to date on his Twitter feed.
Flickr is also displaying lots of photos from the scene, many of them taken by iPhones. Not much happens today out of the sight of a camera or a camera phone. Janis Krums scooped just about everybody using only his quick wits and his favorite mobile phone.

Too bad iPhone lacks video recording capability. That would've been even more interesting to see.

iPhone is supported by Qik. Not only can it record video, it streams it live over the internet.

Are you sure it was an iPhone? While there was conjecture that it was an iPhone, if you check you'll find the resolution doesn't match. The iPhone does not take 800x600 images like this.

iPhone's camera is 2.0 megapixel, it go more than just 800x600.
RicG said 3:29PM on 1-16-2009
Regardless of the source or technical quality, it's arguably the best picture of the event from a photojournalist's perspective. A video would have been nice, but this still image does a great job of telling the story.

Weird that there's no non-jailbreak video recording app. There are applications that utilize the camera like Night Camera so obviously it's possible to access the camera.

800x600 is the scaled down size of the image on the twitpic site - click on view full size and you'll see the full image is 1600x1200 - the same resolution as the iPhone camera.
Unfortunately twitpic has (like most photo sharing sites) stripped all the EXIF data from the image so we can't tell for sure if it's an iphone...

I hate to criticize your grammar - which means, of course, that's exactly what I'm going to do - but the following sentence needs a comma after the term iPhone: "With the popularity of the iPhone a breaking news story, it seems, is never far from our favorite cellular device." I read this sentence to mean that the popularity of the iPhone was a breaking news story. True enough, but that particular meaning does not gel with the remainder of the sentence.
Consider the following possible revisions:
With the popularity of the iPhone, a breaking news story, it seems, is never far from our favorite cellular device.
Or:
With the popularity of the iPhone, a breaking news story is never far from our favorite cellular device it seems.
Oh, and I really do want my iPhone to capture video and and provide video chat services.

the grammatical error you cited, along with your fix, was right. but I wonder if it's hard to sit at your desk all day with that pole so firmly shoved up your butt.
Brandon said 5:38PM on 1-16-2009
Wow, the hostility.
Actually, I gently insert the pole every morning after breakfast before I drive to work. Then, in the evenings, my wife, kindly and lovingly, removes the pole.
Seriously Paul - I'm not a jerk. People want quality.
I honestly love TUAW, but lately I've been noticing some disturbing trends such as, for example, being the last technology blog to post on a pertinent Apple-related story, typographical errors, and grammatical errors. I only mention them here so that the authors at TUAW are aware of the errors, can correct them, and guard against future errors. If more errors such as these arise, readers will leave TUAW for other blogs, a breakup nobody wants to see - especially me.

I'm 100% siding with Brandon here. No need to be so hostile about a kind remark made, just trying to make this site a little less grammatically correct. What you've said is quite obviously POLITICALLY incorrect if you will, and I could bash that as well. But I won't. And neither should you. Just saying, why can't we all just be mac buddies eh?
Rich said 1:04AM on 1-17-2009
Brandon. I love the way you say "such as, for example". I mean, you could have rephrased that "such as, for example, by way of illustration, case in point, for instance".
Twit! Now go back to your grammar book and study, boy!

Brandon,
I think you'll find that sentence is gramatically correct. You might feel clever using more commas than needed, but hey, you, were, obviously, taught, badly, in, junior, high,
KA said 5:26PM on 1-18-2009
redcard, I think you will find that having to reread a sentence due to lack of commas is a pretty good reason to add more commas.

dont you have to have an iphone to send a pic to twitpic? isnt it a set up for iphone users...he would not have been able to get it uploaded and rescue people without using an iphone...no other phone is going to be as easy to upload and forget it like the iphone...
kudos to this guy for being on the ball...snapping the shot...and rescuing those people...
a true hero for us all to look up to...believe that

I hate to be that guy... I've never complained about over iphone reporting before but lets take a step back and look at this story... You're reporting that the iphone was the most popular camera for taking photos at a plane crash... it's just irrelevant pointless news, everyone knows the iphone is popular. It just makes no sense to me why this was even written...

I know I was watching the whole thing going down live on Fox News
Sheppard Smith commented a couple times he was surprised that with everyone and their brother having a cell phone or digital camera that there were no actual pictures/video of the plane going down.
