Clippy brings copy/paste to jailbroken iPhones

Those with jailbroken iPhones who use the Cydia package manager discovered a new add-on in the past day or so -- Clippy, from iSpazio, which introduces a method for copy and paste to the iPhone.

According to users, the add-on inserts two buttons into the system keyboard -- one for copying and another for pasting. Those who have tried it out say that it only accepts user-entered text and copies over one line at a time, which can get cumbersome.

Sebastien over at the iPhone Download Blog gives a detailed overview of how the application works. "After installing the application, type any text you want and simply hit the "123″ button on your keyboard to show the copy/paste buttons. Tap "copy" and start selecting the text you want to copy. Tap "copy" again to end the selection. Then tap "paste" to paste this text where you want it to be." This implementation isn't up to Apple's standards for grace and ease, but it seems workable.

My iPhone isn't jailbroken, so I haven't had the chance to try out Clippy. If you've downloaded and had a chance to try out the app, please let us know your impression in the comments.

Thanks to all who submitted this!

Since we are talking about Jailbroken iphones again I have a question that I can't seem to get answered:
Did the last OS update permanently brick iphones that were Jailbroken?
has the DevTeam addressed it? I know that someone tried to create an Automtor script but that seems to be very flawed.
I haven't updated my mac because I am afraid of bricking the phone. Does anyone have a solution or information to that effect?
Help!

The newest update (2.2.1 (5H11a)) has not been jailbroken quite yet. And it will brick your iphone if you update without jailbraking at the same time. Wait for the update. It will most likely happen by the weekend

Works fine for me. Why is this so difficult for Apple to do? Why must the jailbreaking community keep shaming Apple to implement such basic features?

It is my belief, we would've never even had the "App Store" if not for jailbreakers. If you remember, in the beginning, all they offered was "Web apps" for the iPhone, that was the iPhone's future according to Steve. It was not until unlocking and jailbreaking that the SDK for applications came to be.

I'm a huge Apple user and supporter, but to not have this basic function (copy/paste) after so long, is just plain arrogant.

That's just what I was thinking. They really seem to like being pricks lately and holding out on simple things.

I have looked everywhere in Cydia but I can not locate Clippy. Can anyone direct me where to locate Clippy in Cydia? Thanks

Just make sure you have the latest version of Cydia (it will tell you if you don't), and then use the search function to find it. That's what I did. Should work for you. Hope this helps.

Maybe this is the answer Apple's been looking for...lock a button "select," "cut," "copy," and, "paste" directly into the iphone keyboard, perhaps with a symbol rather than text. I find that a "cut" feature would be just as valuable as copy. For example, when I reply to an e-mail and everything is present that was in the original e-mail, occasionally I decide I don't want to forward all that again...so you have to hold down the delete key on the iPhone forever.

Or perhaps just a "select" button on the keyboard, and allowing a combination of the command key and c, x, and v to work just like the current Mac keyboard.

I don't think most of us are waiting for the ability to cut & paste images...it's simply a matter of text...and this sounds like a winner to me.

It works very well for me. I had no reason to jailbreak my iPhone until I heard about this app. It's excellent! I had no trouble copy/pasting any text that was in an editable text field. For instance, I wanted to copy part of an email someone sent me, so.... all I had to do was hit reply, find the section I wanted to copy, then copy it! So simple! After that just cancel the reply and you're good to go

I downloaded as soon as it came out yesterday. I have been using it endlessly and WOW what a great implementation.

Apple if you read this please look at either hireing this guy or purchasing this implementation for Firmware 2.3.

Talking with the developer of Clippy I asked about Cut etc. His response was

"When theme support is finished, themers will have the option of adding that button if they so choose"

Looks like he will open up the code for others to add their own little tweaks to Clippy.

Nice work Ryan...

one more thing, no need to tap the "copy" button before selecting. The loop tool block selects as soon as you start dragging. This is how I've wanted it to work from day one. This is a seriously great hack.

Working great for me so far -- seems to turn the loop into a selection tool. You can select multiple lines, delete, and copy and paste. I like!

"My iPhone isn't jailbroken, so I haven't had the chance to try out Clippy."

And yet another example of brilliance we've come to expect from TUAW.
