PwnageTool and QuickPwn updated, compatible with 2.2.1
Early this morning the iPhone Dev-Team announced the impending availability of the latest release of PwnageTool and QuickPwn. The feature most touted was compatibility with the recent update of the iPhone's OS to 2.2.1.The announcement over at the Dev-Team's blog also provides some very useful information regarding unlocking and jailbreaking iPhones and iPod touches. It gives heads-up warnings for users in different situations, such as factory-unlocked iPhone owners, YellowSn0w users, and iPod touch owners. It covers what they should or should not do regarding upgrading to 2.2.1 and using PwnageTool or QuickPwn; the Dev-Team also details a fix for entering DFU mode when using OS X 10.5.6.
Currently the release is Mac-only, but a Windows-friendly version of QuickPwn is said to be "coming soon." You can grab the release from the official BitTorrent download. Alternatively, there are several unofficial HTTP mirrors available. The team recommends comparing the SHA1 checksums when downloading from an unofficial mirror. Given the recent string of security-related downloading incidents, TUAW cannot recommend highly enough that users download from an official source or follow the Dev-Team's security advice.
I tip my hat to the many fine folks that sent this in!

Anyone know if there is a way to jailbreak a non-jailbroken iPhone and have it not delete all your apps/contacts, etc?

Jailbreaking won't delete any of that stuff...

this is such a minor, nothing new update, that anyone who is already jailbroken shouldn't even bother with this..

Absolutely! I don't know why even think of updating. For just some *bug fixes*. Would be simply a waste of time backing up, updating, restoring backup and patching caller ID, etc.

While it is a minor update, it does fix the very irritating "blurry photo" bug. I receive lots of photos from friends and family, so it will be worth the hassle to update and re-jailbreak.

I put my phone into DFU and now the screen will not turn on nor the phone itself when I press the power button or plug it in..

I have been very anti-jailbreaking ever since the piracy rate turned out to be so high.

There are plenty of other uses other than pirating apps.
...and piracy wouldn't be high if there weren't so many crappy paid apps in the first place.

"piracy wouldn't be high if there weren't so many crappy paid
apps in the first place."
So... by that logic it's cool to steal a car if you aren't happy with what's on the lot?
Ps, Yes, if you acquire something that isn't yours without paying for it, it's stealing.

"There are plenty of other uses other than pirating apps."
Yes, there are. But jailbreaking still enables pirating apps. Maybe if the piracy rate wasn't so inordinately high I wouldn't mind so much.

So by this logic you shouldn't be using the internet, since it enables the pirating of apps, music and movies/tv shows.
Just because something can be used illegally doesn't mean you need to take advantage of it. Jailbreaking enables some much needed functionality through non-pirated applications and, gasp, paid for applications. Don't knock it just because some people have no concept of right and wrong.

What's up with all the bad pineapple icons on freeware apps? I mean, HandBrake's icon is so ugly that you'll be hard pressed not to tear your eyes right out of their sockets in disgust as is the two examples shown here (not to mention PineApple News (USENET newsreader)). OK, I get it; pineAPPLE. That's so clever it brings on a rash.

It's actually, "pwn-apple." Pronounced, "pawn-apple." Google, "pwn" if you don't get it.
Does that help make your rash go away?

pwn is pronounced own.

Are you really asking why Apple doesn't jailbreak your iPhone for you?
tys said 8:36PM on 1-30-2009
He's not asking Apple to jailbreak for us, he's saying if they didn't put so many limitations on the iPhone, there would be no reason to jailbreak.

has anyone tried this yet? I'm trying to jailbreak a 1st gen iPod Touch and it isn't working. Won't enter DFU mode properly. 10.5.6 issue?
