Turn off Airplane Mode before updating your iPhone firmware
I finally updated my iPhone to 2.2.1 today, and after a reboot I got the screen that says it needs to verify or authenticate the SIM card. Unfortunately, that failed because, while I do have a SIM card in there, I do not have AT&T service -- and I had the cell radio turned off. My iPhone is never used as a phone (I don't have T-Mobile in my area, so even unlocking it would be useless). I wound up restoring the iPhone, which took a couple of hours, but apparently there's a better way.Danny Goodman on the Apple Discussion boards posts this "2.2.1 Upgrade and SIM Error (and Solution)" tip. My advice? Always turn off Airplane Mode before applying a firmware update. The phone wants to access the radio hardware during the upgrade, it seems, and disabling the cell radio makes this impossible. Thus, I was locked out of my phone for several hours today. As luck would have it, I stumbled upon this tip about 5 minutes after I started the restore process.

My suggestion for this:divert your iphone first before updating or restoring!

I experienced the same a while ago with 2.0.1 and also blogged about it: http://mbaierl.com/blog/2008/08/iphone-upgrade-in-flight-mode.html .
Recently I changed my SIM and had to activate the phone again... which is especially bad if you are on the road... :(
I'm a little confused...could you explain *why* someone would have to be a dumb-ass for updating while an iPhone is in airplane mode? Like why that should be innate knowledge?

Without a second thought I put the device on for the update. I don't think its that uncommon for people to suffer from this issue. It would be nice if the update automatically informed the user of the potential issue and allowed them to correct it before completing the update. I fixed mine by dialing a number in emergency mode and then it asks you to re-enable the radio.

Second, I'd suggest to the author, since he says he is not rich, to sell the iphone and buy a touch 2g instead. the touch is smaller, lighter, and less expensive than what he can get by selling an iphone 1g that has no contract and is tied to the less expensive data plan.
the only feature that would then be missing is the camera, and I bet there is a camera on the cell phone that you (also) carry around.
in these tough economic times, I bet you'd come out a few hundred bucks ahead.
As my original discussion board posting noted (anyone bother to read it?), this happened to me with the original iPhone, not the 3G model. The issue was also confirmed by someone at Apple.
And, as for why anyone would be stupid enough to turn off the phone, I work from home, and need the phone only when I'm out. I'm in a fringe area for cell coverage (3G? Forget it!), with too many power/cable outages to rely on VOIP -- it's twisted pair for me. While I'm home, I keep the battery in better shape by using WiFi-only. Since my phone is a Night One model, the number of battery charge cycles is certainly getting up there, so I'd rather not push it.
As soon as a 32GB model comes around, that's where I'll be.
Danny, I read several of your HyperCard books back in the day! Unfortunately, some of our commenters don't bother to read the post titles before spewing venom.
I work from home as well, which is why, even if I did have an AT&T contract, I'd leave it in airplane mode at home, just as you do.
I don't understand why some folks so are upset by this post.
This is actually useful to know, even if it's unlikely to cause problems. I use airplane mode all the time and it it never occurred to me that it might interfere with an update. I could very easily be in airplane mode when the time comes for updating. In the future, I'll make sure it's off, just in case.
A full backup/restore/update/re-sync can easily take over an hour in my experience. A simple update without restore should be faster.

I turned on Airplane Mode when I upgraded to 2.2.1 and didn't have any issues at all, during or after. Odd that you had issues.

1. I own an iPhone and not a touch because: a) it was given to me (I am not rich), b) it had a speaker and mic before the new touch came out, and it has a camera, and c) I already had a cell phone.
2. It is not hacked in any shape, form or fashion. It simply doesn't have a contract with AT&T. Airplane mode is an Apple feature.
3. This is a 1st-gen iPhone.
Why do you have an iPhone if you can't call/internet with it? Ever heard of the iPod Touch?
