17" unibody MacBook Pro deliveries not as speedy as hoped
If you've been waiting by the mailbox for that slightly oversized package to arrive... the wait just got a bit longer. Our correspondents have been sending in the news this afternoon that the expected ship date on the 17" unibody MacBook Pro has been pushed to February 19 -- the original ship date was supposed to be Tuesday 2/3, so this is a big drag if you had plans for that big screen on Valentine's Day.The complete email below:
To Our Valued Apple Customer:
Thank you again for your order!
Wrapping up the new 17-inch MacBook Pro is taking a few days longer
than we projected.
As a result, we will be unable to ship your 17-inch MacBook Pro
until February 19, 2009.
If you don't want to wait, you may cancel your order and receive a
prompt refund by calling our toll-free customer service number at
800-676-2775 or by visiting our online order status website at
http://www.apple.com/orderstatus.
If we do not hear from you before we ship the 17-inch MacBook Pro to
you, we will assume that you have agreed to this shipment delay. In
that event, a shipment notification with tracking information will be
emailed to you as soon as your order is shipped.
Again, there is no need to contact us unless you wish to cancel
your order.
We appreciate your business and apologize for any inconvenience this
delay may have caused you.
Thank you for shopping at the Apple Online Store!
Sincerely,
The Apple Online Store
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

This is a huge bummer as due to military obligations I'm leaving the country on February 21 and now I won't receive my laptop.

If I were you, I would cancel the order and just get the 15".

I had a specific need for getting the 17" model unfortunately.

What's that? The battery life?

Call Apple about this issue, and they may upgrade you to overnight shipping and possibly give you a discount. It all depends on who you get on the phone with. Some reps are more sympathetic. I have called Apple numerous times over issues similar to this, and the best luck I've had is when I am most polite. Try being extremely polite while borderline demanding.

Update: I talked to a couple Apple customer service reps on the phone told me that for whatever reason they can't update it to Overnight. I don't believe that, but they said that if it doesn't make it to me in time (which it won't), that once it gets shipped back, I can contact them and have them forward it to our new address overseas. Again, I'm not sure if they knew what they were talking about, but I have to take their word for it. I didn't inquire about a discount as I don't really feel that I rate it since it's technically still a pre-order because I wasn't charged for it until later today. I try to be honest about that kind of stuff. If I find out later that they can't ship it to me overseas then I'll ask about a discount.

You think the 19th is a bummer, I ordered the anti-glare, so try on the 27th for size. Mind you I ordered mine on the 6th of Jan, minutes after the announcement. My original ship date was the 19th of Feb.

Sadly I do not even have my last generation 17" MBP paid off yet. So I can not even get a new one until I pay the bank for this one I have. Not that I am going to replace it the second it is paid off or anything... But I have my eye on getting a new iMac when they refresh.

I was pretty annoyed until I called and told them how much this sucked. Then they gave me 100 bucks off. Now I am less annoyed.

Personally, I would hold off buying any of these for 3 months until the channel is clear. If they're delaying, they're rushing. If they're rushing the first batch of machines they're going to be problems down the line. Apple is good about keeping customers happy by fixing them.. but not good about admitting they have a problem so you don't have to KEEP coming back.

Oh come on, that's just not true. There is no way to know what was known, and what wasn't, so what you are saying is pure conjecture.
To say that by delaying they are rushing is so laughable. Did you read that before you posted it? The reality is, they might have had some QC delays for a component, and had to delay to address it. The units are likely all made, or close, but these have to shipped to the US, and they don't just do that nickel and dime, they have to wait for a full shipment.

Ditto that. It happened with every major MBP release: 15", 17", and 15" unibody. It will happen again, but that won't make me tell IT to put the order for mine on hold! =)

Man, Apple is slacking lately. No Mac Pro update, no Mini update, no Blu Ray, and now this?!
Let's all boycott those sons 'a bitches.
