Last-minute App Store freebie: Wanted

In the long-established tradition of apps that make your pictures extra silly, Portego is offering its app Wanted free of charge through the end of February 5 (yes, that's today). Snap a photo of the nearest cowpoke (cheesy music is optional, but it does tend to attract a crowd of would-be bandits), accessorize with a selection of facial hair, weapons and other goodies, select the text you want and then save the "wanted poster" to your photos roll.

Even though the 1.3 version notes in the App Store suggest that "ALL CRASHES are solved now," I did have the app lock up on me on my 2nd picture; however, if you get it for free today, what's to complain about? Starting tomorrow, Wanted will set you back $0.99.

My wife and I found this app a couple of days ago. We love it, it's creative and somewhat viral. Apps give you the freedom to have something safe on your system without risking your hardware. Cannot say the same about shady pc apps.

Considering there are literally thousands of free apps on the app store, and plenty that are free for some period before becoming paid, I'm curious how TUAW bloggers (or you, at least) decide which to write about. I think the new review roundup with several apps at once makes a lot of sense, but I find it odd to see a blog post for a single application as seemingly random as "Wanted", particularly just for the purpose of informing readers it's available for download for free for a few more hours. If there were a sale on a very popular application I could see that being of more interest, I'm just wondering what caught your attention about this one in particular.

A fair question. There were a few other posts on other blogs about Wanted over the past week or two since its introduction, and some Twitter chatter as it closed in on the end of the free period -- I downloaded it, tried it out with my kids, and it was a hit with them so I decided to write it up.

We don't have a 'hidden strategy' for deciding which apps to cover and which not to cover; in most cases, it's up to what appeals to the bloggers and their particular areas of interest. When readers send in tips and say "I love this app" that's often the thing that grabs our attention, and then we'll work with the dev to get a look at the app.

It's silly and useless apps like this that makes me want to switch over to a Blackberry.

@Joe

No one is forcing you to download them and use them!!
Get only what you need and want, why bother about crap that you are not interested in..

I don't understand why TUAW would promote a paid app (regardless of being on sale) that doesn't work well, crashes and is beyond a pointless way of giving the developers some cash...

This "App Store" craze is getting out of hand... :/
