ID that font on the go with WhatTheFont for iPhone
If you're a graphic designer, hopefully you're familiar with WhatTheFont, the essential service from myfonts.com that helps identify a font from a photo or other bitmap image. Now, MyFonts is bringing that power to the iPhone.
With WhatTheFont for iPhone, you can take a picture using the iPhone's camera, and use the WhatTheFont to identify the font in the image. No more guessing -- or even waiting until you get back to the computer. WhatTheFont is even useful to iPod touch users -- the software identifies fonts in images saved from Safari, screenshots, or other images in your photo library.
WhatTheFont requires internet access to work, since it connects with myfonts.com to perform the image analysis. It's free, and available in the App Store.

Man, if that didn't crash every time I use it, it'd be great!

Try restarting iPhone after installing. It's not crashing for me.

I've been playing with this for the last 20 minutes or so and I've had about 20% success, only with very easy, non-cursive, fonts.

WhatTheFont is extremely good when logos are tweaked in Photoshop (sharpness + contrast help tons) before submitting. I wouldn't mess with photographed logos though, too much noise to make it work (and no photoshop in iphone)...

The iPhone camera can't focus on anything < 6" away without some additional accessory. Identifying a font from this distance must be next to impossible.

Perhaps combining this with an close up lens, such as on the Clarifi case from Griffin Technologies, would make this a winner.

I've been play with this the last couple days since it was released. Being a WTF junkie, I wanted to make this app myself before it was released but I knew the iPhone camera wouldn't be so great. Turns out the iPhone's camera is definitely limiting and not surprisingly the best results come when the type is 48 pt or bigger and you have plenty of light.
However, you can quickly take a screenshot of a webpage on the iPhone or other images from your library which might come in handy.
