Sneak peek look at Cha-Ching for iPhone

Many Mac users have been using Cha-Ching to manage their bank accounts for some time. The guys at Midnight Apps are at it again, and this time their money management software is on the iPhone.

Just like the Mac version, Cha-Ching mobile allows you to create multiple account and manage your budget, schedule payments, and add payees. Probably the most amazing feature is the ability to sync all of the data from the Mac version of Cha-Ching wirelessly to your iPhone/iPod touch.

When you tap on the Budget icon in the toolbar, you have the ability to see at a glance your current budget. At the top is your overall budget showing how much money you have left on a scale. If you tap on the Budget icon a second time, a history of your budgets for each month will come up. When you're ready to set your budget, tap on "Edit" at the top. You can add or remove categories in the app settings.

New to Cha-Ching is the scheduler section of the app. In this area, you can easily track upcoming bills. You can set the frequency, amount, category, account to subtract it from, and any notes that you might want to include.

Cha-Ching mobile is also location-aware. When you add a payee you can have the app remember the location. When you sort by locations, the nearest payees will show up near the top. This is a great way to track your payees based on where you are. The app will also remember the category, location, and other details about the payee; this makes creating new payments simple because most of the details will be automatically filled in for you.

In the settings section, you can easily see all of your accounts, set user-created categories, secure your Cha-Ching app with a 4-digit passcode, sync with Cha-Ching 2.0 on your Mac, and set scheduler options.

Cha-Ching mobile should be on the App Store soon. It has a sale price of $2.99US. You can visit their teaser page for a quick movie demo of the app.

I hate Pocketmoney's interface.

Mint requires a web account with them and is very one track.

SplashMoney has a decent interface and downloads transactions from lenders and banks, but settings and options are terribly convoluted.

Pennies looks great, but sadly lacks TONS of features that make the app unusable for all but the most simplistic-oriented users.

Ledger has a nice interface and works well, but isn't as feature advanced as SplashMoney.

MoneyWell is great on the desktop so I bet it's iPhone app would be really good as well when it's released.

I personally find this company very dubious. Lack of support, lack of updates, lack of everything when Cha-Ching came out. It wasn't until the betas for version 2 came out, that you saw and work being done like a company that wasn't out of business or fell off the radar. That said, their desktop app showed great promise, though the implementation launched terribly.

If it's iPhone version works, then it works. The interface looks great as expected and feature-wise, it looks set to do what you might need. The icon could use more tweaking. It really looks more like one of a hundred icons put out. Look at Ledger's icon and Pennies icon as well as others. It should feel like you are going to select an object that conveys what it does as opposed to a flat icon with some background rays and a piggy bank on top. I want to feel as though when I go to run the application, it's like picking up a separate device. That's what the icons for Pennies and Ledger do. The icons for Classics, Delivery Status Touch, Jabeh, Lightastic, oneConnect, Sketches, Squirrel, Things, Weightbot, Where to?, 4 in a Row, Kern, Addictionary... and so on. Those are some of the best.

Totally on board with you regarding the icon. Actually bothers me how bummer the icon is given how much effort they've put into the interface. No cohesion. Poor intro.

Midnight_Apps, fix the background and make the pig pop!

I've been using PocketMoney on the iphone for around 8 months now, and would recommend it.

It'll be interesting to see how Chaching copes with scheduled transactions, as I don't think Pocketmoney's way of working is quite perfect for these...

Cha-Ching Touch definitely syncs with the desktop.

We are currently still waiting in the App Store queue but hopefully we will get approved soon.

Glad to see this is finally coming out.

Something that isn't mentioned here - this *does* sync with the Desktop version, correct? That was my biggest desire with wanting this application so much, as I use Cha-Ching locally, but having an iphone version that synced and reconciled would be ridiculously useful.

Frankly, I'm lazy like most people, and I'm more willing to quickly type in an expenditure into my iphone when I'm at the location rather than later, when I get back to my system, have to pull out my receipts, etc.

I don't think that cha-ching and mint are comparable. mint essentially links to your bank, and gives you charts, and insight on your finances. it doesn't reconcile your banks at all. and the major thing is, that it's slow. it's always a few days behind..

cha-ching is more like quicken, Microsoft money, or your check register.schedule bill payments, budgets, and forecasting. it' allows you to reconcile, and keep track of your finances. As nice as mint is, I still think that to rely on it to manage your finances.

while some features of the two overlap, i don't think it's appropriate to compare the two.

I completely agree. Add the fact that you bank has to be specifically supported by Mint to use it.

I do hope the iPhone app is more robust than the desktop version. I found that to be a great disappointment.
Lots of random behaviour and the makers seemed to disappear for a while. Hoping V2 will be more stable.

From my experience Cha-Ching shows great promise as a personal finance app for the Mac, and this iPhone version is a very welcome addition. I personally don't like iBank at all. The interface is ugly, unintuitive, inconsistent and even buggy at times. And since I live outside the US (like the rest of the world) I can't use Mint.

I do agree, though, that Midnight Apps's website is unimaginably difficult to maneuver. I have yet to come by a decent interpretation of what they were thinking when arranging the different pages (old Cha-Ching / Cha-Ching 2 beta / Cha-Ching for iPhone Preview / Cha-Ching for iPhone Feature list). I have only been able to get to the different pages by searching Google or following links from other websites. This is really strange when you look at the simple and intuitive interface of their apps.

Anyway I'm really looking forward to Cha-Ching for the iPhone and Cha-Ching 2.0 for my Mac!

Sorry about the previous post (totally irrelevant). 1Password went a little berserk!

My question was to Midnight Apps. Is there an upgrade path for users of version 1.x?

I agree, some really cool wallpapers. Some free, some for purchase, but a nice selection. Thx.
