StarPlayr bounced by App Store

In a move that is certain to put a serious dent in the dreams of satellite radio fans, the highly desired uSirius Starplayr for the iPhone has been rejected in its current form by Apple.

In a note on their web site, NiceMac LLC says they were told the 'application could not be approved at this time.' Starplayr is available on other platforms, including the Mac, Windows computers and Windows Mobile phones.

The release of the player was thought to be imminent a few weeks ago, but Apple gets the final word. It may be that Sirius/XM has problems with a third party player, or AT&T may have bandwidth issues. The app was delivered to Apple for review January 31st.

The Starplayr team remains optimistic, and says they will do whatever they have to do to get the app to the iPhone. It's all another headache for Sirius/XM fans who are also worrying whether the two merged satellite companies will survive long enough to make all the effort by NiceMac worthwhile.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I've received an e-mail from XM, and one from Sirius in the next couple days saying that "something big" is coming next week. I have a feeling it might have something to do with making Sirius XM available on the iPhone, whether it's with StarPlayr, or their own app.

I don't want to bring you down, but use Cydia, and you risk violating the iPhone EULA and at&t contract, and even DMCA laws.

Too bad...I was really looking forward to this application, although unfortunately Sirius is now charging for their streaming service. With free options like Pandora and Wunder Radio, this becomes less viable by the day. Generally, I'm just not a fan of how stringent Apple has become with respect to restricting new apps.

Way to go guys. Before you submit an app to the apple store how bout making sure it will get approved before you do all the work and make people wait. I just waited 2 months for this thing while you idiots fiddled around with useless beta testing. Just ordered my portable satellite player and will never buy any of your products.

I'm not sure if you are serious or not...so I wasn't going to respond....but here we go.

Listen VERY CAREFULLY: Developers have no way of "making sure it will get approved before you do all the work and make people wait"...none. Zero. Nada.

That is entirely NOT how the process works...see, here is what ACTUALLY happens:

1. You make an app. If you aren't some sort of lame outfit, you *try* to make an app that is decent, even if it isn't world-changing.

2. You submit the app for approval AFTER you do the R&D. There is not "pre-approval" or "pitch" phase.

This is how the process works.

Just thought you might like to know that.

:)

I am disappointed as well. I have been waiting for a way to listen to Sirius on the iPhone for a loooong time. I hope this gets straightened out soon. It would be a cash cow for nicemac and a nice little extra revenue for Apple, I think, since so many Sirius fans want this so badly.
I don't think Sirius has any objection to the app; Howard and his crew have talked a lot about this application and his guys have been encouraging Howard to buy an iPhone; I think when this app comes out he will announce that he has gotten an iPhone. He is such a Sirius supporter that I am sure he will talk it up on his show when it comes out; that will mean a lot of sales for the app.

This is so frustrating. I've been waiting for this app for a very long time; if what the beta testers say is true, then I don't really understand what the issue is. I use NiceMac's desktop player and it's awesome. The antenna to my car receiver just broke so I was looking forward to just using my iPhone to stream while I drive.

It'd just be nice to know what exactly the issue is.

Just so disappointing - I've been anticipating this app for weeks, and this is really annoying. The lack of transparency from Apple is what is so frustrating. At my work we were going to invest in building an iphone app for a great idea we had - but after thinking about the resources and money required to build it, we scrapped it - we couldn't take the risk of Apple bouncing it with no real explanation.

I've heard from a few beta testers how GREAT this app was. Agreed with Scott - there was zero compelling reason for me to jailbreak my phone...now I have at least one.

This is when they tell Apple to sod off and go to Cydia.

There is no way this is a bandwidth issue, there are TONS of audio streaming applications. It's becoming more difficult to remain an Apple fan when an application like this takes a month to review and is not approved. Give it another couple weeks or so then release it to Cydia. You'll get more revenue through Jailbreakers than letting the app sit and rot in the approval process.

My guess is that the app does something Apple doesn't like or allow. I would think that it would be up to Sirius to bump the app off the store AFTER it came out if that was their desire. Sirius needs all the listeners they can get at this point and this app would be a positive boost in visibility for the company.

Question: Is there a player on Android?
