iPhone 3.0 feature predictions: TUAW report card

As is our wont, we predicated today's iPhone press event with our own predictions and wishes for what would be released. Let's look back and see how we did.

Copy and paste

As the event wore on, and everything but copy and paste was being announced, I started to worry. "Someday," I thought, "This event will be known as The Great Copy And Paste Debacle." The attending geek corps were about to slip into Angry Mob Mode, replacing their laptops with torches and pitchforks, when Scott Forstall gave them what they wanted. Crisis averted.

How did TUAW score? Quite well. Mike Rose, Cory, Steve and Aron all called for copy and paste.

Push

Remember Apple's promise of push notification for developers? We nearly forgot, too. It was finally announced today, and Aron was the only TUAW blogger to call it. Incidentally, we shudder to think of how fart apps will make use of push notification.

Landscape keyboard in Mail

Once again, Aron comes through and calls for a landscape keyboard in Mail. I would have done the same, but I've found that my muscle memory has acclimated itself to the portrait keyboard, and I now make more mistakes when it's in landscape mode.

Notes sync

While Aron was the only TUAW blogger to wish for notes synchronization, he wasn't really alone. Fortunately, he got his wish. Score: we're at 4 out of 4.

Lock screen changes

This would have been a good one. Both Aron and I have wished for a customizable lock screen. Instead of the time and date, I might like to see the weather, number of waiting emails, calendar appointments for the day and so on. Apple let us down.

Tethering

We've been hearing rumors about this for quite a while now. Steve, Cory and Mike Rose all called for it this time around, and their wishes were granted. Thanks, Apple! Score: 4 out of 6.

Wireless keyboard

While we saw a slew of cool accessories today (I'm not even a doctor and I want the blood pressure cuff), there was no official keyboard from Apple. While hackers have paired a Bluetooth keyboard to a jailbroken phone, blogger Steve saw his wish for the real deal fall flat. Sorry, Steve.

Springboard changes

This could use some work. Not because it's bad, but because five screens of apps quickly become disorganized and cluttered. Plus, jumping from a collection of games to a collection of utilities is a real swipe-tastic pain in the butt.

There's a concept video floating around that demonstrates how this could work via iTunes. It's neat, but I'd rather see something on the iPhone itself. Similar to how Dash Board enhances the experience on a Newton. Mike Rose, Cory, Aron and I all called for this change. It's due.

Enhanced search

Cory and Mike Rose both asked for greater search capabilities, and Apple delivered. The other features we were after, namely greater call reliability, MMS and calendar enhancement, received one vote each. The enhanced calendar and MMS (for 3G owners at least) are coming for sure; we'll have to wait and see about greater call reliability.

As for the final tally, we went 7 out of 12, or 58%. Not too shabby. What did you miss?

As is our wont, we predicated today's iPhone press event with our own predictions and wishes for what would be released. Let's look back...

How come no one is making any noise about VOPIP?

It was mentioned so casualy, it would imply that ATT is not going to have a problem with it?

So now that subscriptions are approved, will we see an iPhone version of Rhapsody? That would be interesting. I'm using Slacker and it rocks! $3/month for premium radio. That's $10/month cheaper than XM and you can skip songs you don't like. Plus, in the cornfields of Iowa where 3G doesn't exist, Slacker works just fine on the slower EDGE connection or WI-FI.

And by the way, what's really the point of copy and paste? I've been using my iPhone for over a year and I've wanted to use it maybe once. You don't use an iPhone to create long documents so there is little value to adding copy and paste. And MMS? Not really that useful either. When my friends make fun of the "Jesus" phone for not being able to do it, I just ask them how much it costs to send a picture. I can email photos for free and it works just fine.

I wish they had improved application organization, like using a tabbed interface. It isn't that big of a deal, but it would be nice to have headers that say something like "games, business, utilities, links", etc. so you could go to the applications faster.

I think you guys missed ONE BIG THING:

Apple was demonstrating the new iPhone SDK 3.0!

They weren't there to demonstrate any new functionality in the menu interface, or changes in the way apps are organized... changes here are sure to come...

My opinion is that Apple will save this for a later release... why show everything now when a new iPhone is around the corner?

Multitasking may well be on the slate for the new phones, as well... assuming they have a faster, or more-multitask-friendly CPU or GPU.

RE: Push w/ Fart apps.

I think fart apps will output a little more than just noise when using push technology. If you have any of those apps then you should be worried now.

Those that have forcibly pushed farts out know what I'm talking about.

"we'll have to wait and see about greater call reliability"

Dropped calls has to do with a rubbish cell network not the phone hardware or software.
Over here in the UK we never ever have dropped calls from any phone.

How come no one cares about the lack of task-sync. For me, that's more important than Notes-sync. Isn't task-sync fundamental to the use of a PDA?

I missed anything that brings the iPhone up to speed with what Palm is planning with the Pre. I was expecting something revolutionary. I guess Palm really did one-up Apple. On the desktop, Apple's been very successful with a one-version-per-year release cycle with OS X because it's only commercial competition is a slow, bloated Microsoft. With several major players in the mobile space now with their sites set on taking market share from the iPhone, they are going to have to do a lot to keep up once / if people start comparing features.

Don't worry, the Pre for now is tied to Sprint, which makes it a non-starter.

The iPhone has a first-mover advantage and a contracted market share of over 13 million users. Palm also has a history of delays. If the Pre goes on sale before iPhone 3.0 comes out, and it causes lines around the block like Apple had on July 11, 2008, I'll eat my hat. The Pre will be a mild sensation to Spring loyalists, at best.

I don't know if it would be worth being announced but it would be create if Apple released mobile versions of Iwork and ILife...I can understand not automatically including them but it be great if for maybe 20 bucks you could buy a word processor or mobile iweb or something. I'm a Genuis!

Now I am wondering how many of the jailbroken apps will be possible and maybe sold through the appstore? If apple would just allow dock and poof I would be set!
