Rumors about a future iPhone
There are a few rumors floating around today about the next generation iPhone. The first comes from AppleInsider, who are reporting that a video camera will be a part of that design.Referencing a historically reliable source, AppleInsider claims that a future camera will take higher resolution stills in addition to video. The lack of a video camera has been a glaring omission since the beginning, and many users (including yours truly) have been waiting for its introduction.
Another rumor we're tracking is a boast of "faster internet speeds." Just what could that mean? AT&T's 4G network won't be ready for at least a year. It could refer to WiFi connectivity, as the current model has 802.11b/g (vs. n).
It's all conjecture, of course, so we'll have to wait and see. The iPhone 3G was announced on June 9th of 2008, and iPhone OS 3.0 is scheduled to be released this June. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the 3G phone drop in price while a new model takes the top slot at the same time.

I'm ready for the new iPhone. Like a lot of iPhone Edge owners, the 3G didn't have enough differentiation to attract me, especially considering the fact that I'd lost 200 texts a month + the $10.00 3G fee.
If even half of the rumors hold true, and I have the option of 16 or 32gb, I'm in. I'm in all the way to $399.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than one model this time round.

I just hope the battery is better this time around. Also video chat would rock!

I think it is pretty much nailed on that there will be new hardware this June. I'm hoping for 32gb and a decent camera (possibly with flash?).

Why does it literally take a day or more for TUAW to post Apple news? I come here once or twice a week and the stories are always days old.

I'm just saying, but I wouldn't really consider "rumors", news.

If the phone comes with 16 or 32GB, why on earth would you want a microSD slot? You enjoy added bulk or want to take up room inside instead of apple putting something useful in?

The addition of a video camera will be a nice feature. However, it's not something that I really care about. What I would like to see is much better battery life. As iPhone users do more and more web browsing and sending and receiving more emails battery usage goes way up. I have friends who don't even carry their laptops around with them as much anymore because the iPhone has become the device that they use for the majority of their internet and email.

can't one just jailbreak an iphone and use the current camera as a video camera?
granted one on the front would be awesome for video chats.

yes, but poeple like to pretend jailbreaking isn't real, or isn't moral, ethical or otherwise permitted. It's like saying "there isn't anything to eat" when you open a full refrigerator.

If a jail broken phone can do video (which it can), then why would Apple need to add a "video camera". It would just a software update that they put out whenever they so feel like.
Of course if they add this so called "video camera" they can charge for it.

Where did you get the June 2009 date for the 3.0 software? As far as I've read it is just "Summer". Personally, I'm thinking this actually means July or August.

In the keynote, when discussing the availability of the SDK and eventual firmware release, they said June.

To all the apple designers who [shouldbe] reading this, faster Hardware please.
If the rumors end up true and it DOES implement video recording, its going to need more power to run it smoothly. It takes 10 bloody seconds to open the STILL camera app on my phone.
Gimme 32 GB. And for the love of god change the charging method back to the way it was on the 2g.

It takes 10 seconds because one or more of your photos is corrupt. I had that problem too, so i backed up all the photos and deleted them. Camera opens fast once again.
Give it a try. Yeah, not having those photos on your phone sucks, but the faster camera is better than a slow one with lots of photos.

I generally sync my photos to iPhoto then immediately copy them to an iPhone folder that is then synced back to the phone. This keeps them out of the camera roll, and should keep the corrupt pix from affecting you.

I know when it comes to technology there will be new models all of the time. At least with video game consoles this could mean every five years or so. This new iPhone model every year thing is too much! I think current iPhone owners should be offered the option to trade up to the newest model phone at a greatly discounted price. Apple or AT&T can make money with the trade-ins by selling them as reconditioned iphone's at a huge discount with the intent of getting more people to sign up for the expensive data plans. This can be a win-win senerio for everyone involved. The reconditioned iPhone's could be sold for $49.99 with 2 year contact for a first generation iPhone and $99.99 for the iPhone 3G. Remaining inventory of the current iPhone 3G should be discounted to $149.99 with 2 year contract. While the all new third generation entry level iPhone should be released at the same price point of $199.99 as the current 8 gig iPhone 3G. Customers trading in there iPhone 3G for the upgrade should recieve $50.00 of the price of the next generation iPhone!
