SlingPlayer for iPhone submitted to app store
It's something many iPhone owners have been waiting for since the iPhone first appeared 2 years ago. It was on again, off again, will they, won't they? Well, it seems they did. Sling has announced that SlingPlayer for iPhone has been submitted to the app store for approval. The company had previously said the app would be submitted this quarter, and it's in just under the wire.
The Slingplayer is a multimedia system that allows people who have one to watch their TV or other video sources on a PC or laptop, from anywhere in the world. The mobile versions allow you to control your home TV from your handheld device, changing channels, even controlling a DVR. It's a tremendously popular system, and that will be enhanced when the iPhone version makes the scene.
Hopefully, AT&T is on board, and Apple realizes that the SlingPlayer will drive even more iPhone sales. Now stand back and watch the buzz build. Yay. Finally.
Thanks to Rob for the tip.

Stupidly, I bought a SlingBox because sling.com said the iphone app was "coming soon". I know it's not slings fault if the app does not get approval, but they should not have said "coming soon" when they didn't really have approval at the time.
Let's hope it gets here soon! I need to be able to watch Yankee games while at work!!!!

It will be interesting to see if Apple makes it a WiFi-only application. If they don't, I would assume there's going to be a lot of 3G streaming going on that is going to give AT&T fits.

BlackBerry had the SlingPlayer for a number of their handsets since December 2008 and I doubt if anyone even cared. There wasn't very much feedback about it. Maybe a lot of businessmen don't have Slingboxes. Besides, it would cut into their texting time.

How much different would using Slingbox on iPhone be compared to
using the Orb app? Any additional features or advantages?

I've been waiting for this too. I have Slingplayer Mobile beta on my work supplied Blackberry and it works great via WiFi or 3G, but my iPod Touch has a much better screen.
Last summer, I used my MacBook to sling while keeping an eye on the kids in the back yard - this year, I'm planning on using the Touch!

wondering how much sling will charge for spm iphone. they could possibly stick with their standard 29.99 or will they cater to your typical "cheap" app store buyer.

Could very well be free. You still need the slingbox to use it.

Wonder how much battery this will suck up. Slingbox is WMV-based....

yeah very good point, i do wonder how they have got the WMV conversion to work, or if there is possibly any way for the sling box to stream non wmv stuff.... i think that possibly it can stream non-wmv as there is a "web version" or some stream, not sure but i know that its limited to 320*240 and its what the apps that record the sling box's stream use as its non-encrypted unlike the 640*480 wmv one. (app is "Slinger SLR recorder" i think and runs great under codeweaver's crossover )
also, more importnatly will this app have the abality to oputput its video over the composit / componenet av conections that apple sell for the doc conector, it woudl be great to be in a hotel room, hook your iphone to the tv and watch your home tv/sky plus etc... on the larger screen
