SlingPlayer for iPhone submitted to app store

It's something many iPhone owners have been waiting for since the iPhone first appeared 2 years ago. It was on again, off again, will they, won't they?

Well, it seems they did. Sling has announced that SlingPlayer for iPhone has been submitted to the app store for approval. The company had previously said the app would be submitted this quarter, and it's in just under the wire.

Sling already has versions for Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Palm smart phones. No one can predict when, or if, Apple will approve the software, but there will be iPhone owners with pitchforks and torches outside Apple headquarters if the much sought-after app does not appear soon.

The Slingplayer is a multimedia system that allows people who have one to watch their TV or other video sources on a PC or laptop, from anywhere in the world. The mobile versions allow you to control your home TV from your handheld device, changing channels, even controlling a DVR. It's a tremendously popular system, and that will be enhanced when the iPhone version makes the scene.

Hopefully, AT&T is on board, and Apple realizes that the SlingPlayer will drive even more iPhone sales. Now stand back and watch the buzz build. Yay. Finally.

Thanks to Rob for the tip.

This is for all of you:

The iPhone Sling Player App will be up on the top of Featured Apps tonight at midnight.
I hope, LOL.
I agree with everybody that it has taken way too long, I was looking forward to this ever since i got my iPhone and now its so close I can almost swipe it with my finger tips, just like everything else on my iPhone =). Most likely it will be paid, just like all the other mobile clients they have for other phones, and it will not be confined to Wi-Fi. I would not buy it if it was, and I would assume 1 out of every 3 people that would buy it if it worked over 3G, wouldn't buy it if it worked only over Wi-Fi.

Or, you can simply use Orb, an already available application which does the same and more (connected to your PC with tv tuner) and works over wifi, Edge or 3G.

Been there. That page was added with their January press release. I don't think there's any news here... Let's hope I'm wrong.

OK, so I'm confused... I see nothing new on Sling's website about this. They announced back in January that they were submitting to the app store, and since then, nothing's happened. All they've been doing is collecting email addresses ever since. I'd love to get excited, but I'm not holding my breath!

I just bought a SlingBox solo so my relatives can view something I've recorded on my tivo, where they live(Seattle). The fact that I can watch it on my iPhone is SWEET!

Now all I gotta do is to set up another RJ-45 port down by my tivo(the current one is hooked to the tivo)

What's wrong with Orb Live? That's been on there ages.

I love the idea of ORB, but for me it's been horribly unreliable. The video quality is not very good at all, and the orb PC client seems to just stop working at random.

I'll take some of the blame for that, as I have multiple firewalls and a not ideal network setup at home, but why does it work sometimes and not others??

Also, I don't like leaving my PC running all the time (required for orb), and the slingbox allows me access to ALL of my channels and my DVR content.

Sneaky! I'm a beta tester and the last I heard this was still in alpha!
