Rumor: iPhone OS 3.0 to include video editing tools
It might seem like a big leap from a phone with no real video capabilities to one that will trim and clip your creations on the fly, but that's the implication of a few graphic elements sussed out of the iPhone 3.0 firmware by Ben at benm.at (original site in German, translation here). He's spotted some art resources that seem to show editing, scrubbing and clip functions in the next version of the iPhone's firmware.
Even though there are jailbreak apps now that leverage the iPhone's camera for video use (ustream and Qik, in particular), Apple hasn't yet shown its hand on video directions in 3.0. Giving users the ability to edit their video on-device before uploading, emailing or MMS-ing would be a spectacular feature, and there's a lot to like about the idea of a pinch/stretch UI for managing a video timeline. iPhone, meet iMovie? Still, if you planned to do a lot of video work on your phone, a 32 GB model with a faster processor and better camera would be ideal...
Thanks, Ben

Then the update will be free for you.

Probably won't be an update but will be complete new hardware with 3m sensor etc. If you could return, do it! I'm 1st gen iPhone--glad I skipped 3G version....

Return it before your 30 days is up, get some other phone, return it before your 30 days, and do it one more time, and that should get you to late June.

Uh... aren't these probably from the Voice Notes app, which does let you edit your recordings?

I guess they'll use the same interface, just note the file names.

If you take a look at the linked page, you'll see that the file names for the graphics have the word "Movie" in them. So unlikely to be for the Voice notes.

Why does it say "Read More" if there's nothing more to read?!

That's a quirk in our CMS -- fixed, sorry!

I don't think it's powerful enough. Could be useful for test shoots.

I kind of see where Apple might be going. They have been filing patents for various video technologies and functions. I think they might be going toward the mobile video devices that are getting popular. Kodak zi6, Flip mino, Vado, etc. I think we're going to see some video recording coming soon. I don't know if we'll see any "HD", but it'd be neat to be able to edit clips on the phone and then upload them, etc. Mobile iMovie, that'd be pretty sweet.
Sure is getting excited either way. That's one of the things I love about Apple, they are always full of surprises and innovation.

I've toiled around in the firmware files and found "Upload to Youtube" strings buried in there. Seems next phone will have video capabilities, which is great news, but not shocking.

This would be so cool if they had a mobile version of iMovie. The ability to shoot video, edit it on your phone and upload to youtube would make for a very nice addition.

Those could very well be the same ones for voice recording. For one, they aren't going to put a whole bunch of duplicate images in there for each app. They share images and resources to save you memory and simply to make things easier to maintain. More than likely it's some sort of editing framework which will eventually be possible to call from anywhere. Just like no non-jailbroken app actually creates a photo-taking interface w/ cropping and scaling. It's a provided api for programmers to call and then it returns back the result. Probably something similar going on here. If you have a sound or video that the developer would like to let you edit then they can use that api to open up the media, provide an interface and then give the developer back the result.

OK. Who's gonna be the first to claim that their five-year-old Treo could do video editing on the fly. Every damn Palm user has some story about how their ancient Palm handset could do everything the iPhone could and more and yet Palm was kissing bankruptcy a few months back. They're either liars or Palm had the best kept secret of capable smartphones in mobile history.
Of course, the basically non-existent Palm Pre is going to eclipse the next iPhone by an order of 10X just based upon it's keyboard and background processing. Every effing manufacturer of smartphones had keyboards and background processing for years and except for RIM's BlackBerry they barely broke even with profits and Palm was probably among the worst offenders of losing money with their super, high-tech (but rarely updated) PalmOS smartphones.
iPhone 3 and Software 3.0 are going to leave those companies sucking hind tit as far as profits are concerned. When companies such as Sega and EA come on-board with iPhone games, those other handset companies are going to be left fighting for table scraps.

yeah right, edit a video on your iphone and you'll notice your battery is dying... it already is fighting hard enough for everyday usage e.g. calling, web surfing, music... my iphone battery lasts about 2.5 days and that's it :P
i hope they have a new type of battery for the 3rd gen iphone.

I wouldn't hold your breath on the video editing. I speculate that the features being employed will simply clip your video to an 'appropriate' file size for your data carrier. (e.g.: when you e-mail a photo, you are e-mailing a smaller downsized version of the actual photo you snapped.)

Funny thing is... I posted about this in November on Digg and I got dugg down. In fact -1. Guess who's laughing now!? Of course I wouldnt expect anyone to believe some random person posting this either, but... my source knows what's going on all the way at the top. ;-)

Those look just like the controls used in the Audio recording app. Why do we think these are for video editing exactly? Doesn't QuickTime often refer to audio tracks as Movies?
Don't get me wrong, I think this would be cool, just don't think this is for actual video.

It is also interesting in the UIimages images that there is a default pc mouse. White in middle black outline. So this screen shot was not taken on a mac most likely!
