iTunes 8.1.1 showing in Software Update
Check the old Software Update, folks: there's a 68 MB iTunes 8.1.1 upgrade awaiting, or you can get it direct from Apple's site. The notes on the new version are as follows:iTunes 8.1.1 adds support for renting HD movies and provides a number of bug fixes, including addressing issues with VoiceOver and syncing with iPhone or iPod touch. The recent influx of HD movies onto the iTunes store (full list of titles here) promised but did not deliver rentals for HD titles; this update should take care of that detail. Let us know your mileage if you update.
Thanks Bruce!

What do you mean VoiceOver for iPhone and iPod touch? We get VoiceOver like the new shuffle too?

Ohhh... I see. They should have written "...including addressing issues with VoiceOver [for iPod shuffle] and syncing with iPhone or iPod touch."

Would be pretty cool if they added VoiceOver for iPhone and iPod touch. I just recommended it at www.apple.com/feedback/
Thanks TUAW for always keeping us updated!

Can't find any clear HD rentals in the iTunes store after updating. All prices still seem to be $3.99 and I'm still seeing the "Also available in HD on AppleTV" note on MANY movies.

The update doesn't appear to include HD movie rentals in the Canadian store. Unbelievable. :(

HD rentals is not enough of an incentive to move to the USA (and yes, I live in the states.) This is especially so, as I've looked for HD rentals with 8.1.1 in the US store and can't find any, either.

It might be that HD rentals via iTunes will begin Tuesday with some fresh titles, and they're getting this update out of the way now. Apple TV ownership numbers are probably low. People with an iMac, mac mini, macbook, etc. is much higher. Might be as simple as prep for a "big" first day of turning the taps open wide. Or maybe not. Who knows.

You have been able to rent HD movies using AppleTV for quite some time now.
I find it unbelievable that it has taken this long for Apple to add support in iTunes for renting HD movies!

Its called a comment for a reason, its not space for a novel. Want to write a long review, write a blog entry about it.
