Now even wider -- Pano 3 for iPhone

Pano, a fun iPhone app for taking panoramic photos, has been around since last fall and the developers at Debacle Software have been hard at work improving the app ever since. While the first iteration stitched together a maximum of 4 photos, the 2.0 version of the app upped the limit to 6 photos.

Now Pano 3 (click opens iTunes) rewrites the rules for taking panoramas with your iPhone. The new version can automatically meld up to 16 photos, providing 360 degree panoramas. The team at Debacle added a way to resume interrupted panoramas, so if Mom called right as you were taking the fifth shot in your series of sixteen, you can pop back into Pano 3 and start right back up.

While the capabilities of Pano have increased, the price remains the same low $2.99US. I use this app a lot, and it's just about the most fun that you can buy for $3. If you have an iPhone and love to take photos, Pano's deserving of a place on your home screen.

After you've shot a few panoramas with Pano 3, take part in Debacle's I Love Pano Pano Panorama Contest. A group of TUAW bloggers are judges, and there are some great prizes.

This software is nothing short of AMAZING!
It flawlessly stitches the photos together, and it's often IMPOSSIBLE to tell where the seam is. The other amazing thing is how it balances the exposure between the photos. For example, if it suddenly gets darker before you take the last photo (the clouds cover the sun or something) the software compensates for this, and in the result you still can't tell where the seam is. This is really quite an accomplishment. Yes, there is another App called PanOLab which gives you a wireframe globe and you can paste photos on it in 3D then have them all stitched together, but the end result for me looked like a bulletin board with a bunch of separate photos pinned to it. That's fun, but it is nothing like Pano. Pano make simply breathtaking and amazing results that look like magic.

i just bought this after reading the article. Of course I was taking photos from right to left before i realized no, its left to right. Very easy to use, great results. Too bad iphone mail will not send out the full resolution and I am currently without my usb cable.

you could use the app "sendphotos" for sending pics in full resolution via mail.

I just wonder why it´s not possible to make pictures with the full vertical resolution of 1200px (and not the 580-600px from pano).

hi adam,

i really like your app and i used it very often on my last vacation...but i was a little disappointed when i came home and realized that the resolution was too bad to get nice printouts (i know...i should have read the description;)). do you have plans to implement the original iphone 2mp-height? then it would defenitely be a 5-star app!

thanks!

Very nice update. What I realy like is that you stitch your panorama at any point now, after any number of photo's taken. Saving photo's seem a bit faster, so it should be a bit easier to take panoramas with moving object in your frame. Thanks guys!

Is this capable of doing grids or just horizontal & vertical?

I'd like to know as well too...can you take 4 photos in a square pattern to get one wider-angled picture? I would see myself using that more often than a wide landscape pano.

'Panorama' has had this capability since their last release as well. It is pricier at $9.99 but has some advantages over Pano, too. Bottom line is you can't go wrong with either one.

Just purchased this, but it's not working in 3.0 beta :(

Get no photo buttons on bottom of screen and when trying to tap the screen the app will quit.

Unfortunately, we don't officially support OS 3.0 Beta at this time. We are aware of the issue and will address it a bit closer to the official release time of OS 3.0. If you want to get involved in beta testing, send us an e-mail at support@debaclesoftware.com. This way you can get your hands on something working sooner!
