SlingPlayer for iPhone getting closer to release?

SlingMedia thinks so. In a brief note on the Sling website, the company notes: "We are in close contact with our partners at Apple and are optimistic that it will be approved soon. We hope the wait won't be much longer."

Hopefully the company knows something the pundits and rumor mongers don't. It's been a month of excitement followed by depression as lightly-sourced rumors spread that Apple would turn down the highly anticipated app at the request of AT&T, who worried about all the bandwidth the app would use. There was even a change in the AT&T Terms of Service, that the company later disowned and apologized for.

Of course other phones sold by AT&T and other carriers do offer the SlingPlayer Mobile app, but no other single phone has the footprint that the iPhone has.

There have also been rumors that the app might support WiFi only, which would be a tremendous downer for people who expected to be able to Sling away from just about anywhere. Hopefully, this whole soap opera is drawing to a close, but Sling fans shouldn't throw away their torches and pitchforks just yet.

Thanks to Matt for the tip.

You guys should all check out ORB. Not only is it available now, it's also more functional than sling if you set it up correctly.

Well to be honest, having read all the comments on here, i can understand where both sides are coming from, but the fact that it was never advertised as being able to play on an iPhone on EITHER system and then only on the later ones now (if ever released) is kind of confusing.....

My biggest gripe is with AT&T.... WTF....!

Why can they get away with forcing Apple into making an app developer sell a product that has restrictions on it....???

Lets be honest, i'm not even in the good ol' USofA and they are f**king me over....! I pay my money for unlimited 3G access, let me have it Apple....!!! And use the apps as they are designed to be used...!!!

i hate to break it to us early adopters but its called supply and demand. there is a bigger demand for this product/service than is there supply. they can take advantage of us if they please. am i pissed, yes. is it just the world continuing as usual, yes

I'm buggered if I am going to buy a new Slingbox for the odd occasion when I am sad enough to want to watch tv on my iphone. Orb works quite nicely for the odd time when I haven't got my 3G enabled Netbook handy. WTF how much of this stuff do I really need!

@rodalpho: Not really my intent to argue. My main point was that working in IT all of my adult life, hardware upgrades for new features are inevitable and generally unavoidable. Forced or not.

Your hypothesis is quite unlikely, but if that were indeed the case, why wouldn't sling/dish make a statement saying so to avoid all the bad publicity?

Anyway, this is turning into an argument on the internet = special olympics thing, so I'll bow out there.

@rodalpho: I meant when the Slingplayer was demoed, but I think you knew that. What I want to see is the link to the proof that Dish and Sling purposely disabled this to work on older models of the Sling.

You made the statement that they (Dish and Sling) purposely disabled it. I want to see your source. Otherwise, you are just spouting conspiracy theory garbage.

And keep in mind you saw a BETA copy of the player AND it was running on Wifi. It's possible that there were some issues with the software when running over 3G with the older hardware. I'm just guessing but I'd say that would be he case versus they just decided to stick it to their customers. They didn't do this when it was released for WM or BB or Symbian.

Either way though, you know it won't work without a hardware upgrade so their isn't really much you can do. I guess unless you think ditching the Slingbox all together is the answer.

It's still not released, so not sure where you're coming from there. The beta version was available at CES in jan 2009, and it worked with the slingplayer classic/av/tuner at that time. Google it, you can find youtubes showing it, etc.

I personally can't wait for this app to come out. It's the killer
app I've been waiting for the most since I got an iPhone. I'm not
holding my breath and will believe it when I see it. I am losing
hope as the days go by. lol

@radalpho: What is your source for that claim? When the Slingplayer for iPhone was released, the newer versions of the Slingbox were already available.

I'd love to see the source saying that Sling and Dish purposely disabled it.
