Rumor Watch: Apple to buy Twitter
TechCrunch's Michael Arrington is reporting that rumors beginning to float around the blogosphere are stating that Apple is interested in purchasing Twitter for US$700 million in cash. Twitter, in case you've been off of the planet for the last two years, is the magical "social networking" tool that has you answer the question "What am I doing right now?" in 140 characters or less. Twitter currently has more than 25 million users, and it is rumored that growth has been exploding since Oprah blessed the service with her presence in mid-April. However, despite the size and growth potential of Twitter, there's simply no compelling reason for Apple to spend part of its huge cash reserves to purchase the company.
Google recently tried to purchase Twitter, but was turned down by Twitter's CEO Evan Williams. Today's rumor comes from a "normally reliable source" who told Arrington that "Apple is in late-stage negotiations to buy Twitter and is hoping to announce it at WWDC in June."
Despite the popularity of Twitter, the service hasn't figured out a way to make a profit, and is strictly powered by venture capital at this point. Can any TUAW readers think of a reason why Apple should buy Twitter? Leave us a comment!

IMHO, with the addition of real-time search results and indexing, Twitter is the next Google. So if Apple is interested in being like Microsoft and is looking to buy it's way into real-time search, this would be one way.

Think about it, iLife could become the default management platform for Facebook. Photos on Facebook - iPhoto, integrate a music service on Facebook with iTunes integration. iPhone's most popular app is the Facebook app. The iPhone then ties in everything from a mobile perspective. You could even integrate iMovie and iWeb into building blogs and sites under the FB platform.
Twitter to me makes no sense for Apple. Facebook does IMO.
I don't see any immediate benefit to Apple purchasing Twitter - however, several of the industry pundits disparaged Apple's manufacture of a cell phone as well...
Apple isn't stupid, but it will have to pull a Little Blue Bird from a hat if it's going to make this work financially.
It stand to reason that Apple has several financially feasible ways to make Twitter profitable, or they wouldn't express an interest in the first given that Twitter is so far afield from Apple's core business.
Seems sensible to me. Twitter is fairly reliable and simple system that has a good number of clients. There is also a good spread of people familiar with that system creating even more ways to tweak it. Its easier to use than regular telephone texting. Its well suited to any platform, though it works best on iPhones/Touches, and it doesn't bind you to any specific carrier. It works MUCH better than any of the old-school chat systems. It sounds like the future of text communication.
Now mix in some secure/encryted servers and scale for business. Make it possible to have a private tweet session with a small group or large group. The system can become a real universal standard. You can use it to replicate any and all of the previous text-chat systems with only one system.
I would bet that the vast majority of the people jumping on the twitter bandwagon these days have never used any of the old systems, except maybe straight phone texting. And it makes a lot of sense to grab such a popular and familiar system and run with it.
Of course, this still seems like an odd investment for Apple in particular, unless it's preemptive.
Twitter is for Safari..... built in.... no monetize for its own sake, a way to make safari the first of the browsers to have social capabilities.... another way to differentiate the iphone, and the mac....eventually will go to Windows.
Who's got the best browser ???
Twitters ur daddy :)
if apple really does end up buying twitter, i'm canceling my account immediately.

I think a logo of a blue bird pulling a worm from a multi-colored apple would be cute!
I think Apple would do this possibly to charge a little fee or something im sure with all the people in the world using twitter and even if the fee was a $1 a month twitter would have paid for itself.

SEPARATION OF POWERS!
