Developers invited to test iPhone 3.0 push notifications with Associated Press app

If you're a developer running the iPhone 3.0 beta, you may have gotten a special note in your email today -- and judging by the number of you who let us know about the news, there's plenty of those emails going around. Apple is testing the long-awaited push notification feature of the 3.0 software (and the back-end servers that provide the updates) with a build of the Associated Press news update app. If you got an email with a promo code and you've been putting the app through its paces, do let us know how it's going.
Push notification is all well and good, but what about true background processing for those critical applications that need always-on connectivity? More on the prospects for that capability in our next post, coming up shortly.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Why are you linking to Twitter apps regarding "always-on connectivity"? I would think Push Notification would fit Twitter clients fine. (Or was that a joke? If so, it hits too close to home.) It's the streaming audio apps that really need background processing.

It was intended to be a joke -- sorry if it cut a little close to the bone.

Well to be fair, it was barely a joke.

Yeap, I got an error. Gave it to a fellow staff member of Neowin =\ At least somebody can put it to good use, I suppose.

I think the perfect way for backgrounding to happen is for any app on the dock to be allowed to run in the background. Then only four apps can be used in the background and I would finally have a use for the stupid dock. And for quick switching between apps, Apple could have the dock be able to pop up in front of a running app so you can switch to any app sitting on the dock without going to the springboard. Almost like a springboard-to-go.

Is there a link to download the app if you're not a developer? I want to try the puppy out :-)

C'mon Apple, throw us a bone!
I got the message, and right away wondered why there was no incentive. So, are we supposed to think that it's incentive enough to help Apple?

I got the invite yesterday afternoon and installed once I returned home last night. I launched and configured it and I still do not have any pushed notifications. Apple says to give it 48 hrs if no notifications to let them know.

I also installed it last night and I have received 2 push notifications, and the last one also opened to a form for me to fill out to tailor the information for my age group and gender. This app ROCKS!

I'm more interested in "This unique redemption code and the functionality of the application expire in seven days."
Surely they can use this for creating trial versions of apps?

I found this website that i linked to my name above actually found them in facebook, just click on my name to go there, dont worry, you dont need to be a facebook member. They had me up and running in no time and i now have complete access to their Apple developers account with my own user ID and password. They have links to the newest beta firmware for pc's and mac as well as iTunes 8.2 links. It was worth it, just my 2 cents for anyone who is in the same boat i was.
