Rumor: iPhone next gen specs, on-sale date July 17

The previously unheralded Apple iPhone Apps blog has a rumor post up regarding the next generation iPhone hardware, suggesting that July 17th is the expected date for the new phone to be on shelves (reasonably well aligned with an announcement at WWDC). As 9to5Mac and Gadget Lab note, most of the covered ground is familiar -- better camera, storage bump, magnetometer & turn-by-turn, video recording -- but there are a few interesting tidbits, including the suggestion of an OLED screen, an illuminated backside logo (perhaps capable of doubling as a photo flash?), the integration of Google Street View with the compass for 'visual intelligence' as in the Android demo, and a built-in FM transmitter.

I'm not sure that an FM transmitter as an onboard capability is such a great idea, considering the percentage of car stereos nowadays that include either an iPod dock connector or an aux-in jack, but maybe it's plausible. Everything else seems to pass the sniff test, although OLED and a lit back panel are an odd combination. If we do see the new device in mid-July, how many of you are checking your contract expirations right now to see if you can pick one up? Mmm-hmm, thought so.

About the upgrade procedure:

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/upgrade-advantage.jsp

So, if you're a family share add-on with an iPhone 3G or other subsidized handset you need to have had it for 20 months before you get the subsidized contract prices again.

If you're a single line you can upgrade with contract pricing after 18 months. You do not get the credit you would be entitled to until after 24 months, however, that won't matter (see * about no discounts on iPhones).

It seems as if anyone with an iPhone 3G will not fit this criteria on the day the new iPhone supposedly launches. And this link excludes information about early upgrades that can be approved with fees by AT&T customer service for high-tier plans.

I've always been dissatisfied with the quality of audio sent from an iPod through a device to a car's FM receiver. Although none of our cars came with any kind of iPod interface -- or even an audio-in for a generic MP3 player -- we added fully-integrated interfaces to three: my husband's 2004 Mercedes AMG, my 2003 Honda S2000, and my husband's 2000 Chevy Silverado pickup truck. As the variety of vehicles we've installed these devices on illustrates, they're widely available, and, IMHO, far superior to any FM-linking solution. Yes, they'll cost you $100 to $200, but I'll take the flexibility of an iPod over a CD player or even satellite radio any day.

Wonder if the rumored second camera for video chat will be on the new phone: that combined with the OLED would be the killer app for me.

This is the feature I keep expecting to see on the iPhone and similar. It has a camera but no videophone capability? Whyevernot.

Sadly, I'm still holding out for handwriting recognition/capability. Yes, I know, I've heard the responses; I don't care. I want to write on it, not poke at it.

Yea, because everyone has an Audi/VW/BWM. *rolling eyes*

How incredibly disconnected can these cosmopolitan people be? Geez.

I own a Mazda Tribute with a CD/FM Radio. I fit the profile way more than a Michael Rose does as a typical iPhone owner with his beamer or Audi.

I don't see the contract fulfillment being an issue. I know, I know, most people have to wait the full two years before getting a new phone at a discounted price, but, this is Apple basically in charge. They have bent AT&T over and everyone knows it. Apple's main goal with the iPhone is to sell the heck out of each new one (everyone's goal with their product, duh) and I think that they know that you can't sell a crap load unless you let the last adopters get their hands on it too. I am betting that they strike a deal that lets 3G users get one without the whole contract being an issue. Apple knows that their "followers" a.k.a., me, will want the latest and greatest as soon as it comes out and they need us to get it to up their numbers. AT&T is not in charge of their own company anymore. The sold their soul and it is paying off greatly with the iPhone and Apple. All they are now is the middle man.

Plus, my friend who is a assistant manager even thinks that the contract thing won't be held true. F.Y.I., did you know that because Apple is "really" in charge, each stores' quota is that they have to sell at least 1 iPhone for every 4 phones? That's a pretty big deal.

As always Michael you forget the rest of the world where there are at least as many iphones as in the states and where MOST OF THE CARS
DO NOT have an ipod dock or connection so thinking about the other 5.75 BILLION people on the world is not shuch a bad idea

No kidding. Everyone I know with an iPod uses their Belkin FM transmitter dock. This seems like a really smart thing for apple to do. Though I would like to use my FM transmitter while its in a belkin dock so I can use it to navigate with its new turn by turn.

What I would like to see addressed is how users who have the 3G will be handled by AT&T. When the 3G came out, we got the discount pricing because we had bought the 1st Gen iPhone for full price (no subsidiary). But the 3G was bought with a subsidiary. I still can't imagine them making those of us who want to upgrade every year wait an extra year to get the discount pricing, but there hasn't been a peep from AT&T or Apple about this.

Am I in left field thinking about this, or are others wondering the same thing?

Almost at the foul line. AT&T is a business, not a friend.

This is what my main concern has been. Will existing iphone owners get a way to upgrade to the new one when it comes out? It would suck to get screwed for getting a 3G rather than waiting for the next one.
