Sirius-XM iPhone app coming 'real soon'
Sirius XM has revealed a screen shot of the soon to be released iPhone/iPod touch app that will stream the satellite channels to eager listeners. The image of the upcoming app was part of an SEC filing that was included in a PowerPoint presentation shown at a recent shareholder meeting. The app, which is expected to be free, will require a US$3.00/month streaming subscription for current subscribers, and a US$13.00 monthly fee for non-subscribers. No specific release date is known, but it is thought to be very soon.
The company says the app will deliver music channels, sports, talk, news and comedy programming. We've already reported that Sirius had expected to offer the application this spring.
The satellite company has been in financial difficulties and has been losing subscribers faster than it is signing up new ones. The weak economy and drop off in new car sales are an especially tough environment to grow the business. The merger of XM and Sirius was generally thought to have been handled badly, and many people dropped their subscriptions, which has given a boost to internet radio and services like Pandora and Last.fm, although neither service is easily accessible in a car.

The standard audio jack in cars killed Satellite Radio. This app is not going to improve their situation at all.

Wonder if it will include the Howard Stern and live sports channels.

Not easily accessible...unless you have an iPhone which contains an always on internet connection and have streaming radio where ever you go. Satellite is done unless they drastically evolve. This nickel and dime game plan will only bleed customers faster to the free services.

Hee haw. Hee haw.
Ever hear of 3G? You can stream in a car.
Sirius is going to kill the competition.

Sprint Blackberry Curve (work phone, hoping we might switch to AT&T :D) + Pandora App + audio cable = Cheap XM replacement.
Granted you have to have a signal, but I have not ran into that problem much.

Nevermind. I guess it still hasn't come out.
Hasn't this app been "coming out" forever?

Pandora & Last.fm are pretty accessible in the car with an iPhone. I like the Slacker Radio app too.

Pandora and Slacker are in serious (not Sirius) trouble due to their lack of a revenue model and royalty issues with their song lists. Is there a place for internet radio? yes. Is Sirius dead? not quite yet.

Not easily accessible? ...huh....
An iPhone, free Apps, a recent enough car to have an AUX jack... Pretty easy.

I've been a subscriber for 5 years. Besides the annual package, they have tacked on a $2 online subscriber fee. and now a $3 a month fee to listen with the iphone app. this is going to hurt SiriusXM even more.
arghghghgh!!!!!

I liked XM radio when it came with my car, but it's not worth 13 dollars a month. I would do $3 on my iPhone, as a past user who enjoyed the jazz channels (and Chicago's jazz station just went Spanish this week) but with AOL music and all the other free services out there, they can't really believe I would spend $13 a month for the 45 minutes a day I would use this on my phone. Die already and let someone who understands the market, and the economy, fill the void!

$13.00/month for radio? Do people actually pay this?

no kidding...
with all of the free radio apps (or even wunder radio, which is a one-time charge of what... like $6... for 30,000 stations...
who the hell is gonna pay a monthly subscription for xm/sirius?

I have been listening to XM on my iphone for the last month using an online subscription ($7.99 a month), by using the OoTunes software in the app store.
It's a pretty sweet program, with a built in browser, so you can surf the web, check web mail, etc without exiting the program. Kind of like multitasking within an app. It cost me $2.99 and was some of the best money I spent in the app store.
I wonder if the new rates will affect Ootunes users. If so, I'll cancel XM. (Sirius is supported in Beta and there are many more streams besides SiriusXM that you can access thru Ootunes.

I was on the fence when I thought the total price would be $3. Now that I learn that it will be $13 a month - let's see how can I put this?
Not in your F'N life!

Who needs this App? Pocket Radio can stream XM-Sirius and plenty more!

Pandora does not offer 1/10 the what Sirius does. Enjoy your free commercialized music.
PS. You will need to pay a subscription fee for that soon too.
