Next-gen iPhone photos leaked?
The iPhone blogs says they've uncovered the very first photos of a brand new version of the iPhone (the pictures are watermarked from a site called UMPC Fever), and while there's no actual indication that they're real (at the very least, it wouldn't be hard at all to make a picture and load it on the iPhone stream), they are worth a look, if only as ideas. The pictures hint at what's basically a dream roundup of new iPhone hardware: a camera with autofocus, a digital compass, and there are hints at a CPU log as well (which may be a developer function of some kind).A few people note that there is a percentage near the battery, but that's actually a known function of 3.0, and it's been possible on jailbroken iPhones for a while as well.
To add to the mystery, commenter Dstreelm in the comments over there took a look at the metadata on one of the photos (the one supposedly taken by the iPhone), and it was taken near Hong Kong, just a day or so ago. It's definitely all rumors, so take it all with a grain of salt, but it does lend more credence to the idea that we'll be seeing a new version of the iPhone hardware very soon.

Hmm I wonder how those compasses can come in handy? (Thinks of the US War Machine) Map marching to the objective while listening to your favorite playlists, and making Facebook posts... hoo-wahhh
Fighting terror? There is an app for that. :)

So they go to the trouble to take fuzzy pictures of an interface we already know about, but not any pictures of the hardware itself? yawn...

Used just before loading the Quran app, devout Muslims wherever they are in the world will know exactly what direction to be in to face mecca for prayer time...

Or better still, the app developers behind the Quran apps will include code using this API for helping the prayng Muslim face Mecca...

The "CPU Activity" page looks very much like the Unix 'top' command.
I do like the mystery the blurriness imparts, though. I think I saw Bigfoot's reflection in one of the pictures.

Somebody had complained that they think the compass is too detailed or too fancy-looking and takes up too much screen space. Same for the voice recorder. I believe this is the way Apple wants the UI to be. Make it look as close to the real thing as possible.

With proper GPS why even bother with a compass... Is it some kind of geocaching thing?

a compass helps a lot with directions... I would sometimes had to move in order to know which direction the map wanted me to take.

@ibeartouch - gps tells you where you are, compass tells you which way you're facing even if you're not moving.
Some great augmented reality apps on android show it's use.

Hmm yahh true day. Not a GPS owner here, although I have it on my non-iPhone. Perhaps I should do some Googleage. ;-)

It looks pretty nice. I can actually imagine that apple would put more details in the iPhone interface. A more accurate battery indicator and symbols for silence and unread e-mails, MMS, SMS or calender events are very helpful. On my iPhone 3G I have these notifications trough jailbreak and a app called 'notifier'
