TUAW First Look: 1Password touch 2.0 for iPhone and iPod touch
Agile Web Solutions, developer of the 1Password secure password manager for Mac, has announced the release of 1Password touch 2.0 for iPhone and iPod touch. The app, which is available through Friday, June 5th as a free download, is much improved over the previous versions and includes new functionality as well.I downloaded and installed 1Password touch 2.0 [App Store] yesterday and was pleased to see that some previous issues have been resolved. The app now launches much faster, and the user interface has been improved for adding logins, passwords, and notes.
One of the biggest improvements is in how 1Password touch handles wallet items. These are things like driver's licenses, bank account numbers, internet account information, or other information that you may need to have at your fingertips, but would like to have secured behind AES-128 encryption on your iPhone. Previously, you couldn't add or edit wallet items on your iPhone; now you can.
WiFi Sync is now available as well (replacing the previous sync functionality, which was branded differently). You need to be running 1Password for Mac version 2.9.16 or later, as well as 1Password touch 2.0 or later. The sync is very fast, and it makes moving password and wallet information between your Mac and iPhone a piece of cake.
If you don't currently have a secure password manager for your iPhone, or if you're not happy with the one currently installed on your device, be sure to download 1Password touch for free during the next few days. Check out the gallery below for some screenshots of the new version.

This is an incredibly brilliant application. Until I got my Mac, I had used SplashID, particularly on the Lifedrive. But 1Password far and above exceeds anything that SplashID have put out.
The computer version of this program is phenomenal. The ability to have a master password and control your input into web sites is incredible. To have this automatically do this with your iPhone as well is priceless. additionally, the sync features are just second to none.
One thing that is not advertised is the abiilty to carry the 1password keychain on a usb stick so that you can use it anywhere that has the program built in. Additionally, 1Password's licensing activity, making the licensee the individual and NOT THE COMPUTER that it is attached to, means that you can download 1Password to any Mac (and I think they are in the works for a Windows model, if I read between the lines of their latest updates), and just have your key available. This makes upgrading computers and having multiple computers a treat.
I highly recommend this program to anyone who doesn't have a password program and to anyone deciding to purchase one.

So I have 1Password on my Mac (this is a great program- you should definitely give it a try) but I'm stumped with the iPhone app.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong or don't understand the functionality, but I can't get it to work with my standalone apps (is it even supposed to?). That is, I use 1PW on my Mac to login to BoA.com, but my iPhone has a BoA app. Do these two play nice together? I can't seem to make them if they are supposed to.
I really love the program but I'm not quite sold on the iPhone app yet.

Apple doesn't allow programs to interface with each other like that on the iPhone. That's why 1Password has its own dedicated web browser.
Jamie Phelps said 5:47PM on 6-03-2009
pusitch is correct, but even on the Mac side, 1Password only interacts with browser applications for filling forms online. The OS X keychain is the lingua franca for Mac developers to save sensitive data, and we don't want to replace this functionality. We want 1Password to be the lingua franca for how Mac users interact with forms on the web.

Nice, I just installed it. I haven't used a program like this yet on my phone but my wife has a Blackberry and has her password program loaded. I'm sure I will be using it a lot as well.

This is a killer app and when iPhone 3.0 comes around and allows you to copy and paste your passwords... it will be brilliant.

Naaa, Apple should allow password manager in Mobile Safari! Wait, actually they have this in iPhone 3.0 beta already... though we cannot import the current list from 1password... Will research and then blog about it, it saves a lot of time...

I own the Mac-based version of this program, as well as the free version for the iPhone, and I've got to tell you it is THE program for the Mac platform... at least for me. I bought the 3-pack license so I could use it on a couple of my machines, and it was worth every penny. I highly, HIGHLY recommend this app.
That being said, I believe the iPhone version still has a little way to go in terms of features. One of the issues I had previously was the sync was a bit flaky, but 2.0 fixed that and made it even easier to use IMHO. But the one killer feature the iPhone version lacks is this: MOBILE SAFARI INTEGRATION. If they could make this work with mobile Safari much the way it works on the Mac, it would be a massive win for Agile. Its really the only major complaint I have with the iPhone version as it stands.
So as a standalone iPhone app, it's a good thing. It really is, but personally I only use it for a backup of the 1Password data I have on my Mac, and occasionally use it to look up info on the road. Thats where my problem comes into play. If I forget a password on the road, I literally need to fire up 1Password on the iPhone, enter my PIN, find the info I need, enter my master password, then get the password I was looking for. Without iPhone 3.0, I would need to write it down at that point or remember it to enter it into Safari, you know? With 3.0 I could just copy and paste I guess :) But still, thats too many steps to go through just to get a web password if you ask me... especially considering I have 1Password on my phone. See what I mean? Mobile Safari integration would mean EVERYTHING. I don't care if you charge me for it, I just think thats the single killer feature its missing.
Ok I'll quit rambling now. But seriously, for anyone who hasn't bought this yet for their Macs... GET IT NOW. You won't regret it I promise you that. This program is pure genius. Take care everyone! -- Adam

We would love to integrate with Mobile Safari like we do on the Mac. Right now, the way Apple sandboxes applications prevents us from doing so. The built-in browser is the best option we have right now, and we're working to make this feature even better in the future.
Regarding the amount of time it takes to look up an item, please note that you can turn off master password protection for items in 1Password on your iPhone and then only need to enter your four-digit unlock code to access the data. We're planning to bring the ability to edit these security levels to the Mac side to make this a better option for our users in the future.

After a few years using it, I just can't live without 1Password. Only those who have not fully experienced it can say that "you can easily do the same for free". I hesitated a long time to shell out cash for this but the 30$ this cost me were very well spent and I estimate the value of the time saved with this tool to at least 10 times that every year.
Hint: I have recently configured Dropbox to share my 1Password entries between my two macs and it works like a dream. If I create some web account on my laptop and boom, it's also instantly back home on the mini on my TV or vice-versa. One great thing about the license they sell is that it's per user, not per machine. So I don't have to buy one for my laptop and one for my mini.
Also the team at 1Password has been extremely responsive over the past years (look at the time it takes them to update to adapt to a new Safari beta or alike).

Very dissapointed with the latest changes... I had to switch to their keychain format for the new sync feature to work (the old way disappeared) and I find it significantly less robust than using regular OS X keychains synced over MobileMe with my other Macs. Their proposed solution is to put the password file on the iDisk, rename it so that it's not treated as a package and make sure iDisk syncing is on.
I allready had iDisk syncing on, I put it there and had problems when for some reason my iDisk changed mountpoint. This could be a Mac OS X problem, but I don't care - it used to work, and now it doesn't.
Hint to developers: Apple conveniently creates a symlink (/Volumes/iDisk), please let me use it.

Hi Konstantinos,
Thank you for the feedback. We had several big reasons for using the new format. Please see this blog post for more details:
http://www.switchersblog.com/2009/06/1password-touch-20-released-with-new-wi-fi-sync.html
I completely agree with you on using iDisk for syncing. We also found that using iDisk is not very reliable and plan to add a better solution for MobileMe users in future. In the meantime, it might be better to use an alternative syncing service.

i love 1password (desktop) and have loved the iphone version, but i'm having trouble with this new version. my same problem is described here:
http://support.agilewebsolutions.com/showthread.php?t=16584
i can't figure out what i'm doing incorrectly, either. i've put in my master password about a half-dozen times now, and it just sits there, forcing me to cancel and the app to quit. the video mentioned as being helpful, uh, isn't addressing the problem in question.

Hi Frank,
To answer your question — there are two security level in 1Password touch: pin code and master password. You set them both when you started the application for the first time. Please see this screenshot of the welcome view:
http://skitch.com/roustem/b1mna/img-0014
Both pin code and the password are required to upgrade the database after the new version is installed. We were astonished to discover that there is a number of users that do not remember (did never use?) the master password. We are now adding support for partial database upgrades for people who cannot recall the master password and the update will be submitted to Apple later tonight or tomorrow.
This is the change made mostly for Windows users who did not sync their data. If you already have a copy of your data on Mac then you can simply reinstall 1Password touch and sync data back from your Mac.
Best regards, Roustem

thank you, Roustem – another thing that's great about 1Password is your excellent customer service. : ) i'm on a mac (of course!) and i've used both my 4-digit PIN and master password on my iphone, but it's still not working for me. i'll wait to see what the update holds for me.

You might have set a different Master Password for the iPhone than the one in 1Pass on your Mac. That confused me for awhile too...

I upgraded the iPhone app to 2.0 from the previous version earlier in the week. While I gained the ability to add items to the wallet, the bottom four icons did not change. Therefore, I have no way to access the wallet items. The icons on the bottom of my screen do NOT match the picture posted above?

memengo is such a better app. it syncs onto their website with encryption thus making your data accessible world wide AND any operating system not just macs. you can have a 64 char pw too. 4 digit lock codes can be broken. also pastes passwords into webpages!
highly recommend checking out memengo, its well worth it. setup an acct on their website to check it out before you buy the app.

I've never really 'got' the need for 1password.
On my iPhone, why would I want to use a product that forces me to use a third party browser? I recognize that's not the developers fault, but does it not just mean that I have to remember to use this app rather than Safari if I might want to enter a password at some point?
On the Mac side, my keychains automatically sync across machines anyway.

Well, you may not feel like spending money for MobileMe, you may want to carry all of your passwords on your person without carrying a laptop and you may use multiple browsers for various purposes and would like them all to have the same up to date set of passwords.
(Not a 1password employee, just a very happy user)
