iPhone 3.0 Firmware Antici...

With WWDC just a short while away, iPhone users everywhere are looking forward to the upcoming 3.0 firmware release promised back in March. So when will 3.0 debut? Apple hasn't said[1].

In March, Apple promised that 3.0 would appear this Summer, causing pundits to speculate that the firmware and a refreshed iPhone line might hit the streets in early July, around the one year anniversary of the 3G model. July 11 marks the date that the 3G iPhone and App Store finally launched.

Rumors have been flying in recent days that 3.0 might bow as early as next Monday. The recent release of iTunes 8.2 supports that idea, indicating that Apple may be closer to a 3.0 update than originally thought. TUAW readers point out that apps which have publicly announced remote notification support have begun appearing in iTunes, albeit in 2.x releases.

There's no reason I can think of that Apple should have to wait for new hardware before releasing the 3.0 firmware to the general public. In fact, I'd greatly welcome an earlier release for enthusiastic reasons I cannot expand upon due to the ongoing NDA. Others have pointed out that a staggered software/hardware release might avoid the iTunes server capacity issues that plagued the 2.0 firmware release.

So when do you think Apple will start shipping 3.0? Let us know in the comments and cast your vote in this handy poll.

When will the iPhone 3.0 firmware ship?
At WWDC6885 (66.0%)
Early July with new hardware2512 (24.1%)
Early July without new hardware568 (5.4%)
Some other time this summer474 (4.5%)

Mostly off topic, but related with the demo 3.0 apps already launched...

Has anyone else tried to get ESPN's ScoreCenter to work? I downloaded it today, but it continually crashes, even after restarting the iPhone multiple times.

I'm running iphone OS 3 beta 5, and I've had a lot of issues with it. Mostly small issues, but hopefully they will be resolved before final release.

I've been getting a TON of dropped calls, and really never had any issues like that before OS 3. A call will start, and almost every call will be dropped after a minute or two. It's horrible, a phone that can't "phone" is completely useless.

That's the main issue, the rest are almost all performance related. The OS and all apps are a lot more sluggish and everything just runs like absolute crap after the iphone has been used for a bit after boot up. Restarting helps, but the poor performance always comes back.
It's not just a little slow either, it's nearly unusable.

I've tried a complete restore, and all the usual tricks. Unless the hardware decided to crap out at the exact moment I installed OS 3, it's all software problems.

Yes, I know I should expect issues with beta software...I'm just hoping they will be fixed in the final release.

i don't get all the comparison with Palm Pre. It's only available on SPRINT, maybe if were on VERIZON, but on SPRINT. I'm suffering enough with AT&T, next carrier is VERiZON. Nothing could be released on SPRINT to make me switch to that carrier.

When I did an iPhone sync on June 1 after installing 8.2, it checked for firmware and said the next check would be June 5 (Friday) - same for my wife's phone. If memory serves, those checks usually get pushed out a couple weeks until the next check - not just four days.

So I speculate tomorrow (Friday) for a few reasons.

1 - The 'next-check' date. (I'm curious about dates other people see).
2 - If phones are being released in July, then final OS's will have to be with manufacturers now for assembly and shipping.
3 - It really steals Palm's thunder and Apple gets a chunk of the tech news cycle Friday through Tuesday.
4 - The keynote really isn't that long and they don't usually cover that many topics. They have already gone over the OS 3 features, and I don't see them re-hashing. WWDC is for developers and they need to spend alot of time on Snow Leopard to make a case for why developers need to develop for it and why consumers need to buy it. After that, they have time to show new iPhone hardware. Those two things alone are an hour easy.
5 - As mentioned, Apple will not again make the mistake of a iPhone OS rollout the same day as a new iPhone release.

I'm probably wrong and we'll end up waiting a few more weeks.

My "Check for update" date is the 9th of this month... I've seen this since about 2 weeks ago...

Now will the update allow us to assign our ringtones to text messages?

The check for update date usually sets itself to a few days (about 5 or 7) after iTunes last checked for updates. If you force a manual check for updates, it should change the "next check" to a few days out.

Apple may have a method for controling these to stagger traffic, but I doubt it.

I'd love to see the ability to assign ringtones to text messages, or for that matter, to be able to specify different sounds for a particular contact's text message, and have that different from their ringtone and the default text tone. But as far as I know, that will not happen with this release.

In Walt Mossberg's review of the Palm Pre he states:

"I’d note that the new iPhone to be unveiled next week will have lots of added features that could alter those calculations."

He could be mistaken, or just guessing, but who knows??
