Rumor: New iPhone pictures leaked?
With the increasing evidence that a new iPhone may be just around the corner, we've seen our share of screenshots, speculations, and mock-ups. Now, the Italian iPhone blog iSpazio has posted pictures of what could possibly be the next iPhone (English Translations: here and here). As can be seen from the images, the new model appears to feature some interesting changes near the earpiece. In addition to the slot already present on the existing models, both of these images clearly show a wider slot at the top of the face, just below the bezel. Also of note is the small, green LED present near the earpiece on the screenshot. Our tipster suggests this could be part of a front-facing camera. It also looks like the mute/sleep switch has been moved to the top-left of the phone. However, the supposed website image still shows the switch on the top right.
While I personally am skeptical about the LED in the screenshot, these pictures do look promising. What's your verdict? Could this in fact be a first look at the next iPhone? Let us know in the comments.
Update: As eagle-eyed reader John points out below, the headphone jack appears to have been moved to the bottom right of the device (if you're looking at the front of the phone). Good catch!
Update 2: After looking closer at these images, I noticed that there is a small button near the bottom of the right side of the phone. It looks to be in the right position for a shutter control when you are using the camera horizontally.

Blatantly not a screenshot... the LED is probably the AF light (or similar) from a digital camera.

I was aware that it was taken with a camera, so "screenshot" was probably not the best choice of wording there. I've updated the post.
Though you bring up an interesting point, that could be a reflection from the camera. I hadn't thought of that, I was leaning towards it being added with Photoshop, etc.

Occam's razor ;)

Why don't you try looking at the original image!!!! It's a picture that's on a banner! If the pic is real, then it's not a reflection from a digital camera (which BTW, those auto focus lights turn off before you take the pick, jeesh).

Yeah, I'm aware the AF light normally turns off before the photo is taken, which is why I said "(or similar)" in my reply. However, my camera has a green ring that illuminates around the power button, which has been known to show up in reflections when photos have been taken.
How you determined that this picture is on a banner is beyond me as anyone with a modicum of perceptive skills would notice the mouse cursor at the top right of the screen from which this photo was taken.

The green light means the camera (or mic) is on? Could be interesting!

It looks like the jack is on the bottom.

It looks like you're speculating. It's impossible to tell (even on the current iPhone) from a face-on view.

I'm not looking at the face view.

My apologies. That's a shame; I'm not keen on the jack being located on the bottom. I guess that'll make it impossible to use with headphones whilst docked.

Got it. Blatant fake! The "SMS" icon is only in iPhone 2.0 software. The iPhone 3.0 software has this renamed to "Messaging" with a different icon.
Michael Jones said 4:09PM on 6-04-2009
Good point, but keep in mind that MMS may not be available to all countries. It is also possible that the shots taken for PR use were taken with an early build of the 3.0 software.
ShALLaX said 4:15PM on 6-04-2009
Regardless of MMS availability, the application retains the name of "Messaging" (I do not have MMS enabled on my 3.0 iPhone).

@ShALLaX: Most docks have stereo headphone connectors built into the dock itself.

I suspect that the picture is fake.
Look at the 3G icon near the top of the screen. It's the previous square design as opposed to the current sans-box icon. Also, the Voice Memo application will be standard in the 3.0 software phones, which is also suggested by the main picture of this post. Thus, there would be an additional icon for the Voice Memo on the main screen.
However, Apple rumors have started to become real and I am not totally holding my doubt on any rumors that come out immediately before a model release.

If these were really taken from the an unpublished Apple web page, wouldn't they screens display the updated/new application icons?

The first image (the one with the Voice Notes app open) was supposedly taken from the website. The second, more clear images of the photos were found in a second post from iSpazio's blog.
As noted in the post, I'm skeptical about the screen capture image, particularly because of some differences between that phone and the phone in the second link (notice the position of the sleep switch, the missing percentage indicator next to the battery, and the almost invisible earpiece slot).
While it is possible that these were prototype models that were photographed for PR purposes, they are some odd differences.

I'm with kmiller3. I feel pretty strongly that any prototype build of a 3rd-gen iPhone would have the new Messages and Voice Memos app icons. And if it's supposed to be a leaked promotional image? No way, no how, would it have OS 2 on it.

well if there is a camera dead center, that would be where the "on" indicator would be

Is it just me, or does "Ebony, Curious, Advanced" sound completely non-sequitur.
I know its "Advertising Speak", but still...
