Microsoft releases Office 2008 12.1.9 to patch Word vulnerability

There's a new patch in town. Microsoft Office 2008 was updated today to protect against two privately-reported vulnerabilities in the handling of Word files; these security risks could have allowed an attacker to execute arbitrary code on your machine. The update also patches Entourage 2008 to prepare for the Web Services edition of the mail and PIM app.

The 154 MB/268 MB (delta or combo) update is available through Microsoft's AutoUpdate tool or via direct download.

Still until now I'm not comfortable with Word 2007, I hope 2008 will be better.

Yeah, I'm having the same issue. It won't install the upgrade. The only thread I can find about this on the Microsoft site is a forum thread staffed by volunteers who are too busy defending Microsoft that trying to help solve the problem.

Anyone have difficulty installing Office 2008 12.1.9 update on a MacBook Pro? My effort resulted in failure to install the update on either the HD(int.) or another HD(ext.). Will I need to delete the original Office installation and re-install Office 2008? That seems like a bit much. Surely, there's an easier way.

Why does a security patch for a word processor require almost 500 MB of disk space?

No, because I refuse to pay through the nose for a defective product like Office. I have a personal policy of not paying for any of the Windows or Office software anymore; besides, open source is a great way to support up-and-coming developers.

I don't think Word is commonly exploited for Mac users but Microsoft's Mac division needs to fix Windows Live Messenger. The messages it sends are hit/miss and it tells you 5 minutes after message sending failed. It can't display chat histories in the window, doesn't support video/audio, doesn't support handwriting, UI looks stupid, and there's this one particular bug that skips the first letter you type immediately after you send a message.
