Apple invites iPhone devs to test AIM/push notification

We're getting tips from multiple sources that Apple has invited a group of iPhone developers to test drive AOL's updated Instant Messenger app for the iPhone -- complete with push notification -- in an effort to see how Apple's servers will handle the traffic. The invitation included the following:
"As a developer actively working with iPhone OS, we would like your help in a private test of the Apple Push Notification service. For this test, we have selected AOL's AIM Developer Preview for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers."
The test run of the new AIM app is only available on iPhone 3.0 Gold Master releases. Final release date is unknown at this point.

Edit (6:30 PT): Additional word from developers chosen for the test shows that this beta version of AIM will cease to function after seven days.

Thanks to all who submitted this!

I tried it. Wow, it

a) works in parallel to iChat
b) messages arrive faster via push than on my Mac.
c) push works brilliantly.

cheers

So i didn't get the aim app yet, but i have the 3.0 GM on my phone and I don't see the notifications option on my settings app. Will this appear as soon as I have an app that supports push notifications?

Push is horribly integrated into popups. Badges and sounds is great but the popup is disgusting.

The whole notification system needs rewritten on the OS. Sorry to say, the Pre nailed it most likely after witnessing the atrocity that is iPhone txt popups and such.

Also, AIM Push sucks when I logged into my laptop version. I still get the push notifications. Frustrating and obnoxious.

PLEASE apple, redo this notification system STAT.

ho! calm down

you can configure your iphone to never use "popups" (or badges or sounds or whatever)

You can also just tell to aim to never use "popups" (or badges or sounds or whatever).

all is fine and great.

the whole push system is nothing like pre.

Enter it in iTunes and you have to sync your iPhone apps to iTunes (sucks, i know)

If you entered it into OS 3.0's appstore and it threw you an error, then just check for available downloads in iTunes store menu. You dont need to enter it again.

I can't wait for Twitter clients and something like Adium to become available using this. For me this really is all the "multi-tasking" ability I need.

I installed it and though I do not use AIM it worked correctly and quickly. Rather impressed with the way it works, cannot wait to see more apps taking advantage of it.

Got mine after a while. Did a test and the IM came immediately. Clicking on the "View" button from the notification screen takes you directly to the conversation.

I got the invite, but when I attempt to redeem the code from the email to download the app, I get an error: "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-4). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."
