Apple invites iPhone devs to test AIM/push notification
We're getting tips from multiple sources that Apple has invited a group of iPhone developers to test drive AOL's updated Instant Messenger app for the iPhone -- complete with push notification -- in an effort to see how Apple's servers will handle the traffic. The invitation included the following:"As a developer actively working with iPhone OS, we would like your help in a private test of the Apple Push Notification service. For this test, we have selected AOL's AIM Developer Preview for iPhone OS 3.0 to create a high-volume test environment for our servers."
Edit (6:30 PT): Additional word from developers chosen for the test shows that this beta version of AIM will cease to function after seven days.
Thanks to all who submitted this!

I didn't get it, and I am a developer.
Is this for select developers, like the AP News beta?

I just got it, I think there is a delay because of the large volume of devs..
Be patient
P.S: It's awesome :)

AIM hasn't been free for a long time now. There's a free version and a paid version.

I have it and I can confirm it is working really well. I don't generally Use AIM but I tried it out tonight just to test push.
Messages popped up on the phone literally the second i hit send in AIM on my desktop, despite the fact the AIM app was closed on the iphone at the time. Clicking on the message (which also makes a sound BTW) opened up AIM and allowed me to respond.
Also, under settings a new option appears to administer push notifications.
I can't wait for Twitter clients and something like Adium to become available using this. For me this really is all the "multi-tasking" ability I need.

I got it without delay. It's quite impressive. And, I'm totally digging the potential replacement of SMS.

I got it! I have to say I definitely won't reinstall AIM after this test period is up, multiple conversations could make things very annoying.

I got the invite, but when I attempt to redeem the code from the email to download the app, I get an error: "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-4). There was an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later."

Got mine after a while. Did a test and the IM came immediately. Clicking on the "View" button from the notification screen takes you directly to the conversation.

I installed it and though I do not use AIM it worked correctly and quickly. Rather impressed with the way it works, cannot wait to see more apps taking advantage of it.

Enter it in iTunes and you have to sync your iPhone apps to iTunes (sucks, i know)
If you entered it into OS 3.0's appstore and it threw you an error, then just check for available downloads in iTunes store menu. You dont need to enter it again.
