OS 3.0 compatible apps already trickling in
Some of our readers have informed us that Tap Tap Revenge (iTunes store link) has been updated to version 2.6, boasting compatiblity with iPhone OS 3.0. This is most likely merely the first of many apps that will see updates in the coming weeks, but it's interesting that Tapulous has unleashed this update so far in advance of OS 3.0's release. If you are running OS 3.0, upon launching the new version of Tap Tap it will ask you for permission to send push notifications to your device. If you allow them, a new category called Notifications will appear in your device's main settings, which will allow you to toggle push notifications on or off. Additionally, it appears that each app will have individual settings for badges and alerts.

It's not likely that Tapulous will be sending any push notifications just yet, as Apple has yet to throw the novelty-sized Frankenstein knife switch to activate push services. It's also unclear at this point what type of push services Tap Tap Revenge may offer after that switch is thrown. It is an interesting preview of things to come, however.

Just downloaded the 3.0 approved Twitteriffic, hopefully this fixes the Twitter API error we've all been getting. Installing 3.0 as I type, here's to push notification tweets.

How'd you get an updated Twitterriffic? I'm not seeing an update here.

@Jayson: Twitterrific 2.02 (free version) was updated last night. The Premium version update is still pending approval.

Looks like no push settings yet, I just downloaded it. Bummer.

Actually, the push notifications for Tap Tap Revenge 2 are up and running fine. As long as you're running 3.0, that is.

Yeah tuaw, do you guys not read engadget? they have a vid up of the push notifications actually running, therfore, it works right now if you have 3.0 (or the beta version....)

Seriously TUAW, Engadget gets Apple scoops wayyyyy before you do. And on the WWDC Keynote day, you didn't have anything posted on the new iPhone for at least a half hour after it was announced. Why??
buckers said 12:11PM on 6-15-2009
Oh, and I should point out that the notifications they're pushing are when someone wants to challenge you.

Wait... how is 2 days in advanced "so far in advance?"
What's wrong with some preparation?!?!

I agree. Don't forget that the App Store approval process is notorious for making developers wait upwards of two weeks for their apps to be approved and added to the App Store. If I were a developer, I would certainly have submitted my 3.0 update as soon as possible, as that would increase the odds that Apple would actually approve it by the time 3.0 is released this Wednesday.

I believe I saw somewhere that the notifications are challenges from other players, which pop up and allow you to go straight into a battle with that person. Sort of like on Xbox Live.

This isn't new, remember a month ago all the stories of apple requiring developers to submit 3.0 compatible apps. Any apps being approved now would have to have had 3.0 compatibility, otherwise they can't get passed the approval process. The only thing about this is developers are just letting users know their app is compatible. http://www.tuaw.com/2009/05/07/breaking-no-new-app-submissions-unless-they-run/

Are there any chat applications or skype with push notifications already available? To me that would really make the phone more useful.

yea, a developer preview of AIM has been released to allow the developers to help apple test the push notification service.

Time for the Adium guys to make the magic happen on my iPhone. Please?
And as another commenter pointed out, video on Engadget shows that these notifications are running for people with 3.0 GM, so the frankenstein switch has been thrown.

The patch notes say that the push will include a badge icon for unread feed items as well as SMS-style alerts for when you're challenged to a game by your friends.

I have 5 apps that say "iPhone OS 3.0 tested". They've been trickling in since at least Friday.

Why is this even news? I've been seeing OS 3.0 updated apps for a while now, it's nothing new. Oh wait, this is Tapulous....
