Find my iPhone: How to set it up
With all the excitement about iPhone version 3.0, there isn't a lot of help on how to set up one of the most unique features of the upgrade, Find my iPhone. If you're having trouble, here are the steps. First, the service has to be turned on. You do that in your iPhone settings. Under email accounts, select your MobileMe info. You'll get to a page that has an on/off switch for Find my iPhone. Turn it on.
After that, you must be in your MobileMe web page. Sign in. At first glance, you won't see anything. You have to click on the accounts icon, and you should see a Find my iPhone icon at the bottom of the account settings. You can then decide to find your iPhone on a map, send it a message, or remote wipe it. I found the map pretty accurate, as I have a metal roof on the house that plays hell with GPS and cell signals. I sent a test message. That worked fine, and I received an email confirmation that the message was sent to the phone. I didn't try the remote wipe. I've spent enough time today downloading and uploading iPhone software and data.
Note: Apple MobileMe servers are a bit spotty today. It took me a couple of tries to get into my account options.
Find my iPhone is a powerful new feature. I hope I never need to use it.
Here's what the icon looks like on the MobileMe page:

apparently "Location Services" has to be turned on, and left on, since one can't anticipate when the feature will be needed. So my question: How does "Location Services" affect battery life? Thanks.
July 10 2009 at 9:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyfind my iphone does not display the location map on chrome.
I tried various combination of reset, turn find my iphone on/off.
Finally it turned out it was my Chrome browser that was the culprit.
Firefox worked fine.
This is a great feature, but you cant access it from the iphone browser. Say you loose your phone in a bar, your friend has an iphone but you cannot log onto you mobile me account to find it... really annoying.

It's stupid as hell though that it can be turned off by the thief instantly. It should require entering the iPhone's password to change that setting. It would be no burden to the legitimate user, but would prevent a thief from disabling the system in a couple seconds.
As it stands, it's very handy for finding a lost phone, but any thief who knows what they're doing will have it off before the user can do anything. Even if your phone was stolen while you were sitting at your computer and logged into MobileMe, it would still take less time to go into settings and disable the feature than to perform a wipe, and forget about tracking. Last known location will be about 5 steps from where it was stolen!
I'm thrilled with this new feature. Losing the phone pales in comparison to all my private stuff floating around out there.
But...
Hours to remote wipe? What happens if it's aborted a minute into it?
Also, any would-be thief that knows about this feature could just turn it off or remove the MobileMe account. That's kinda lame.
If you have multiple iPhones synced to the same MobileMe account, as long as you have the Find My iPhone featue turned on for all the phones they will all show up in the MobileMe account settings pane. They are separated; you can locate each individual phone on a map, & you have an option to send a message to any individual phone or wipe data from an individual phone. Both my phone & my wife's phone sync to the same account & both are showing up just fine.
June 17 2009 at 9:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is how I assumed it could work, but I can't seem to get my wife's phone to show up... I've enabled it on both phones, but only mine appears in the Find My Phone tab. I wonder what I'm not doing?
June 18 2009 at 12:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi tested remote wipe with the phone off, when i turned the phone on it worked for about 5 minutes, then it began the wipe. it did in fact take about 3 hours to complete.
June 17 2009 at 8:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have two iPhone's. One for my business be one for personal use. Both have MobileMes find my iphone turned on, but both sync up with the same MobileMe acct. If I lose my work phone and want to wipe it will it wipe both my phones?

June 17 2009 at 8:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFor what it is worth, I beleive I have documented "Find My iPhone" working on iPhone OS 2.2.1, and that my iPhone was sending my location data to Apple prior to the OS 3.0 update. (and without my knowledge)
