On the lookout for Push Notification apps
We can't wait for iPhone 3.0 to arrive (c'mon, isn't it Wednesday somewhere already?), so in the meantime we're making a list and checking it twice. AppAdvice has posted a short list of apps known or expected to include Push Notification capabilities, including IM+, AP News, Tap Tap Revenge 2.5 and AIM. ESPN's ScoreCenter (promoed at the top of the store earlier today) was also announced as a push-capable app during the original iPhone 3.0 event. We've got a few others that seem to be promising PN capability at or near the 3.0 launch, courtesy of reader Joachim's research help: Beejive IM and ngmoco's Touch Pets Dogs. A quick search of Apptism for 'push notifications' reveals a few more candidates, including David Fletcher's ChatMaster. Searching the iTunes Store itself shows a couple more interesting (and not necessarily shipping) apps: speed trap checker Trapster, killer Jabber/XMPP client OneTeam, personal finance tool BillMinder and IT manager's virtual machine toolkit VManage all list PN on the roadmap but no sign of new versions yet.
Once the 3.0 version is released and developers can loose their tongues, we fully expect to hear about scores of updates to take advantage of PN and other new features. If your app is among the revised horde, shoot us a line at our app review address.
Thanks to Will for the suggestion.

Completely agreed. I'm in DC. I plugged in my iPhone 3G, crossed my fingers, and still, no 3.0 update. It needs to get here.
oh, and I also want that meebo app.

It's not midnight in Cupertino yet. Besides, I don't recall Apple ever releasing an iPhone update at midnight before. I'd expect the release at about 10 AM Eastern. Or you could have just gotten the Gold Master... Same build number as the 3.0 release.

Yep, we're nearly finished w/ BillMinder's PUSH integration. Some testing tomorrow and some minor last minute stuff before we can send it to Apple for approval. :)

That last article went down quick. I'll say that I'm excited about Push, even though I have a 3G in an EDGE-only area. In fact, I look forward to getting notifications -and- calls. Crazy!

I just hope I can make phone calls once it's activated. I read somewhere that I couldn't!

Take it easy man, that nonsense has been retracted already.

No matter what iPhone you have, you will be able to make phone calls with push notifications turned on. The only thing is that, while on Edge, you most likely won't be able to receive them while making a call. You'll receive them right after you hang up. Don't quote me on that part though, I am only saying that because, while making a call on edge, you can't connect to the internet.

Yeah well because the GM actually IS the newest version?
Kevin said 11:27AM on 6-17-2009
yeah i know the gm is the real one but before itunes used to say that version 2.2.1 was the current version :/ and i think that the gm and the real version are going to have different numbers...

It has just gone noon here and I am getting the same response I got at 0800: 2.2.1 is the latest. This is the same as the 2.0 update and I am not expecting anything until about 7pm, Thai time.

I've just noticed the New Zealand Apple website says June 18 for iPhone OS3.0.
Looks like we won't get it first down here after all...
